Jaguars name Marrone interim head coach

A day after firing Gus Bradley, the Jaguars have named Doug Marrone as their interim head coach.

Marrone had been serving as the team’s offensive line coach and assistant head coach for the last two seasons. He was head coach of the Bills in 2013 and 2014 before opting out of his contract.

The Jaguars announced that general manager Dave Caldwell and Marrone will address the media at 2 p.m. Monday.

Bradley was fired after Sunday’s loss in Houston. The Jaguars were 14-48 in his four seasons as head coach.

So they named the interim HC that fans were calling for in October?

Back as head coach, just how you planned it up when you quit on Buffalo eh Dougie?

  3. RegisHawk says: Dec 19, 2016 12:42 PM

Interim for the next two weeks…need to check with Vegas on the odds he’ll up and leave after one week…

  4. BIGGSHAUN says: Dec 19, 2016 12:43 PM

Dougie Fresh pulled a fast one out of Buffalo, thinking he was going to be a hot coach commodity. Instead he got left on the scrap heap. Now he’s the interim for Jacksonville. This definitely sounds right!

I’m a Titans fan and I’m afraid the Jaguars are going to beat the Titans next week… I am trying to prepare myself for the massive disappointment of being so close to the playoffs, beating good teams at home and on the road, and then losing to the 2-12 Jaguars who just fired their coach. It would be such classic Titans.

    Wait until he quits.

  7. todd6162 says: Dec 19, 2016 12:47 PM

He’ll quit on the team in a week Lmao!

  8. bvolke says: Dec 19, 2016 12:49 PM

Doug is a quitter. Trust me Jacksonville. You don’t want him.

  9. joetoronto says: Dec 19, 2016 12:49 PM

He had the option from walking away from Barfalo with 5 million bucks or staying in that wasteland.

He obviously made the right choice, good for him.

  10. captainwhodat says: Dec 19, 2016 12:52 PM

    …would Bill Cowher be interested?

  11. mongo3401 says: Dec 19, 2016 12:53 PM

If I had EJ Manuel as my starting QB I would quit too.

Never fails. The teams are always the good guys. You’re free to be fired any time though, Dougie.

He finally got that HC coach he was looking for when he resigned from Buffalo

  14. edelmanfanclub says: Dec 19, 2016 1:03 PM

Also I think he resigning had to do with the fact he still got paid and their was a new owner coming in. Not that I agree with it or how he did it, but he probably didnt want to be a lame duck coach so he opted out and still got paid.

    That’s Saint Doug to you…

  17. concmike says: Dec 19, 2016 1:21 PM

Welcome to the “Dumpster Fire” that the Jags have become. Sure “Gus” was a nice guy but he is/was a terrible head coach. Now you get Doug “I Quit” Moron to finish the season….The owner is a joke…the front office isn’t much better but hey with a record like that you should have a few good picks in the draft to waste…..well at least the Browns and 49ers get more press on how bad the teams have become…..

Here is the report on him leaving. Well, the Bills always had the option of buying him out of that three day option, especially in light of the success he had there. The Bills chose to roll the dice with this guy and he left. He left knowing that he did a good job there and another opportunity would arise. For his sake, I hope it’s not with Bortles.

His opt-out clause gave him a three-day window after the season ended to decide whether to stay or to go and collect $4 million with no offsets. On the first day of the window, Marrone says, he believed he was staying. He met with the team and had the Bills’ schedule for the next six months mapped out. But by Day 2, he had doubts. He won’t say what caused them, only that the concerns arose after meetings with Buffalo’s management.

We’ll trade you Jed York for your first round pick in the draft……

  20. hawksfansince77 says: Dec 19, 2016 1:36 PM

    What a maroon!!!!

  21. luther6 says: Dec 19, 2016 1:39 PM

Russ Brandon and Doug Whaley should be fired just for including a $4,000,000 opt out clause in Marrone’s contract. What a pathetic organization.

  22. lingsun54 says: Dec 19, 2016 1:40 PM

I don’t think Gus Bradley was the problem. It isn’t like he had a good QB and a talented roster.

  23. bchap17 says: Dec 19, 2016 1:41 PM

Is he going to implement his fast paced, ineffective offense as well?

  24. gotitan says: Dec 19, 2016 1:54 PM

None of this will matter come noon on Christmas eve!

  25. jeffreyshulenburg says: Dec 19, 2016 2:30 PM

Doug Marrone has been named Interim HC of the Jacksonville…and he punted in the red zone.

  26. henryjones20 says: Dec 19, 2016 2:32 PM

He is from the Bronx and left the Bills because he thought he had the Jets HC gig but he was wrong. If Bowles gets fired, bye bye jags and hello New York.

  27. baldbuc says: Dec 19, 2016 2:32 PM

Look at the bright side, you can still always go for a swim in your stadium.

Luther6- Whaley has had no say in picking coaches.Brandon wanted him because they are both Syracuse boys and the Pegulas wanted Rex because he charmed the heck out of them. Explains why Whaley hasn’t got along with his coaches. He didn’t hire them and then they try and go over his head(marrone storming out of the draft room when whaley takes Watkins is a prime example.)Gotta let your GM do his job which includes hiring his own coach.

  29. unclebluck says: Dec 19, 2016 2:49 PM

As a Bills fan all I can tell you Jag’s fans is that your team wont want to play for “Moron” because he tries to run the team in military fashion ala Greg Williams and we all know how that worked out. Then you will witness “Moron” punting from inside the other teams 40 yard line on a regular basis. Finally when you have experienced the mediocrity of the 8-8 or the 9-7 seasons and just missing the playoffs again….well, dont say I didnt tell you so. So when your fed up with “Saint Moron” we’ll be happy to give you Wrecks number so you can give him a try.

  30. usmutts says: Dec 19, 2016 2:49 PM

Why would anyone criticize Marrone for enforcing a provision in his contract that Bills management agreed to? If the Bills agreed to giving him an opt out provision with pay, why should you find fault with his using it? After all, teams fire coaches all the time before the contract is up, thus having to pay a coach for not coaching.

Brandon went to Saint John Fischer College in Rochester which is why the Bills hold their training camp there every summer.

Marrone thought he was a sure bet to take over the job at the Jets. The owner of the Jets made flattering comments about him. Ole Dougie thought he was going to get $4 mill from the Bills and then slide over to the Jets and get paid again. Then Manish Mehta happened. He wrote some very unflattering pieces for the New York Daily News on Doug and all of a suddon the marriage was over. He took a job as an offensive line coach at the Jags and here we are today. Google it, that’s how it went down. Good riddance Doug.

  33. joetoronto says: Dec 19, 2016 4:52 PM

He got to leave Buffalow and get a 4 million dollar check, I’ll bet he couldn’t get out of there fast enough.

  34. hamlet423 says: Dec 19, 2016 6:36 PM

Marrone wanted EJ manuel gone. He knew he would never be a starter and would just be a distraction.

GM opted to keep Manuel as a backup.

Marrone wanted more control over personnel and couldn’t get it. So he took the buyout and left.

Rex Ryan comes in and trusts EJ Manuel to be his backup. He cost them at least 1 game in London vs the Jaguars and also lost to the Bengals. He is a turnover machine.

So yeah, Marrone might have been smart. With so many potential job openings, he’ll finally re-surface if he wants. Could be the Rams coach, could be back with the Jets, who knows?

  35. ralphwilsonisrich says: Dec 19, 2016 6:38 PM

Maybe maroon will coach the Argos one day as well. Joetoronto will be there watching him right in the front row

  36. luponatrix says: Dec 19, 2016 6:49 PM

Enjoy your Douggernaut offense, Jacksonville – complete with punts from the +32 yard line, exotic hard count formations, and a clueless, thin-skinned coach who can’t handle even a whiff of criticism. He’ll fit right in with the tarps in the upper deck, you’ll barely be able to tell the two apart on game day.
