I called The Coup’s Boots Riley earlier this afternoon (a guy who runs neck-and-neck with The Roots’ ?uestlove, TV on the Radio’s Kyp Malone and the Mars Volta’s Cedric Bixler Zavala for the distinction of coolest ‘fro in music. But I digress.) And while we spent most of our time talking about his band’s upcoming Seattle stop, which is Aug. 6 at Chop Suey, he also revealed the existence of a side project called Street Sweepers, a collaboration with friend Tom Morello of Audioslave and Rage Against the Machine fame.

Here’s what else he had to say about that. (All apologies for the static and sketchy sound quality. His cell reception wasn't so hot down there in Florida, where The Coup was on tour when I called.)

You heard it here first. Riley said he expected the project to materialize this fall. And given the fact that Riley is a rapper, and that The Coup's leftist lyrical leanings are on par with Morello's old band, could this be a return to Rage Against the Machine form? Hmmmm?

I heard about this recently at The 2008 East Coast Blues and Roots Festival, Byron Bay where I was chatting with Stanton Moore, drummer for New Orleans funk band, Galactic. He is collaborating on the project, doing the drums. Look forward to hearing it!
