Okada, Maehara, Noda Support Kan For DPJ Presidency

TOKYO (Nikkei)--Foreign Minister Katsuya Okada, Land Minister Seiji Maehara and Senior Vice Finance Minister Yoshihiko Noda have expressed their support for Naoto Kan, who is running in Friday's election to select a new Democratic Party of Japan leader.

Kan leaves Lower House Speaker's residence Thursday morning.

Kan, finance minister and deputy prime minister, met senior ruling party members Thursday morning to secure support in the election, to be held to choose Yukio Hatoyama's successor. The winner is to replace him as prime minister as well.

In addition to Okada and former Prime Minister Tsutomu Hata, Kan also met with Lower House Speaker Takahiro Yokomichi. A Yokomichi-led faction has decided to support Kan.

Kan also hopes to see DPJ Secretary-General Ichiro Ozawa, who leads the party's largest faction, to ask for his support.

Kan plans to meet the press Thursday afternoon to talk about his policies and how he would run the government.

Meanwhile, DPJ factions are seeking to field candidates to compete against Kan.
