UNDRO INFORMATION REPORT NO. 1
27 MARCH 1984

1. SINCE SERIOUS FIRE BROKE OUT ON 24 MARCH 1984 IN MANDALAY, UNDRO HAS BEEN MONITORING SITUATION. UNDRO/UNDP PERMANENT REPRESENTATIVE REPORTS OVER 2,700 HOUSES DESTROYED AND 23,250 PERSONS RENDERED HOMELESS. GOVERNMENT OFFICES, CO-OPERATIVES, COMMERCIAL AREA, SCHOOLS, STORES, MEDICAL CENTRES AND CINEMAS DESTROYED. LOSS OF PROPERTY ESTIMATED AT 33 MILLION US DOLLARS.

2. PEOPLE RESCUED FROM FIRE BEING ACCOMMODATED IN SCHOOLS AND PUBLIC MUNICIPAL BUILDINGS.

3. IMMEDIATE RELIEF NEEDS IDENTIFIED BY GOVERNMENT AS BLANKETS, TENTS, CLOTHING AND MEDICINES. LEAGUE OF RED CROSS SOCIETIES HAS MADE APPEAL FOR THESE ITEMS.

4. SO FAR GOVERNMENT OF BURMA HAS NOT REQUESTED INTERNATIONAL ASSISTANCE.

1. CENTRAL FIRE RELIEF COMMITTEE HEADED BY MANDALAY DIVISION PEOPLES'S COUNCIL CHAIRMAN WITH SUPPORT COMMITTEES FOR SECURITY, HEALTH, SANITATION, TRANSPORT AND COMMUNICATION, RELIEF AND WELFARE, IN CHARGE OF RELIEF OPERATIONS, ASSISTED BY NATIONAL RED CROSS.

2. FOLLOWING MEETING RANGOON 29 MARCH, MINISTER FOR SOCIAL WELFARE AND LABOUR VISITED MANDALAY RELIEF CAMPS 2 APRIL. NATIONAL RESPONSE INCLUDES MEAL PACKET DONATIONS.

3. HEALTH DEPARTMENT HAS DIRECTLY REQUESTED W.H.O. FOR URGENT MEDICAL SUPPLIES FOR DISTRIBUTION IN ELEVEN RELIEF CAMPS.

4. BURMA RED CROSS HAS REQUESTED ASSISTANCE THROUGH LEAGUE OF RED CROSS SOCIETIES (LRCS). LRCS APPEAL FOR SF 652,000 FOR CLOTHING, SHIRTS, TOWELS AND BLANKETS. DONATIONS IN RESPONSE TO APPEAL MEET APPROXIMATELY HALF RELIEF NEEDS.

5. GOVERNMENT USA HAS CONTRIBUTED US DLRS 15,000 TO BURMA RED CROSS. GOVERNMENT U.K. HAS CONTRIBUTED U.K. PDS 5,000 (US DLRS 7,115) TO GOVERNMENT OF BURMA FOR FIRE VICTIMS.

6. GOVERNMENT OF BURMA HAS NOT REQUESTED UNDRO TO LAUNCH INTERNATIONAL APPEAL FOR ASSISTANCE.
