General Background

Henan has a total area of 166,000 sq.km. Total population stood at 93.9 million in 2006, the highest among all provinces in China.

Zhengzhou, the capital city of Henan province, is an important railway hub of China. Main national railway lines such as Jingguang, Taijiao, Longhai and Jiaoliu all traverse in the city.

Henan is rich in mineral resources. Its reserves of molybdenum, marble trona, asbestos, aluminum, natural gas, cesium, bauxite, coal, perlite and refractory clay are among the largest in China. The Zhongyuan Oilfield is one of the largest oilfields and Pingdingshan Coal Mine is one of the four largest coal mines in China. Currently, half of the aluminum oxide output in China comes from Henan.

Industries

Henan is one of the country's main commercial crops production areas. Major agricultural products include cotton, peanuts, mushrooms, tobacco and fruits. Henan has developed into an important food processing base in China, producing meat, frozen food, instant noodles, biscuits and seasonings etc.

Henan's industry is dominated by heavy industry, which accounted for 65.6% of the total value-added industrial output in 2006.

In 2006, the value-added of tertiary industry increased by 13% to RMB372 billion. Being an important traffic hub, Zhengzhou's value-added from service sector reached RMB86.6 billion, the largest among all cities in Henan.

Tourism

As the birthplace of the Han people, Henan has many cultural heritages and scenic spots. There are three capital cities of ancient China in the province: Luoyang, Kaifeng and Anyang, all of which have many sites of great historical value, e.g. the Longmen Grottoes is one of the World Heritage Sites.

In 2006, Henan received 131 million (+30.0%) domestic tourists with tourism receipts of RMB102 billion (+30.2%) and 757 thousand (+26.1%) overseas tourists with foreign exchange revenue of US$274 million (+26.7%).

Foreign Trade

Major exports included chemical products, textile materials, building materials, base metals, footwear and machinery.

Major imports were electronic parts, chemicals, salt, copper, etc. Major import sources were the US, Japan and India. Henan's import from Hong Kong reached US$68.3 million in 2006. In terms of total trade, Hong Kong was the 4th largest trading partner of Henan, after the US, Japan and South Korea.

Foreign Investment

A number of well-known multinational enterprises such as Toshiba and Panasonic from Japan, General Electric, the International Telephone & Telegraph (ITT) and Coca Cola from the US, Renault from France have invested in the province.

Actual foreign direct investments grew by 50.1% to US$1.8 billion in 2006, mainly engaged in manufacturing (52.9% of total investment), production & distribution of electricity/gas/water and real estate. Industries of high efficiency and low consumption of energy are encouraged, and more FDI are expected to flow into services sectors.

Hong Kong is the largest source of foreign direct investment in Henan. In 2006, actual investment from Hong Kong amounted to US$622 million, accounting for 33.7% of the total. Other major sources of investment included Taiwan, the US, Singapore and Thailand.

Consumer Market

In 2006, retail sales of consumer goods rose by 15.5% to RMB388.5 billion. Major consumer markets are located in Zhengzhou, Nanyang and Luoyang. In 2006, annual per capita disposal income of urban households reached RMB9,810 (+13.2%).

Zhengzhou is traditionally a major distribution center in central China. It was approved by the state to be the pilot center for distribution reforms. Major retail operators include Jinboda Commercial Mansion, Denis Department Store, Tongley Appliance Chains, Henan Star Chains, Carrefour and Walmart.
