When trailers for ‘Bridesmaids’ first began to appear, it probably drew a collective sigh from female audiences getting a little tired of the same wedding-based comedy. However, critics and audiences alike are finding themselves taken by the recently released movie; it currently holds a 90 percent “certified fresh” rating on the popular movie site Rotten Tomatoes.

Christy Lemire of the Associated Press called ‘Bridesmaids’ “surprisingly daring and alive,” and attributes its success mostly to ‘Saturday Night Live’ actress Kristen Wiig, who wrote and costarred in the film.

Wiig stars as Annie, a Milwaukee woman who has experienced both professional and personal problems, losing both her bakery and her boyfriend in the past two years. Annie lives with an off-putting British brother and sister, and deals with her mother who tries to put a positive spin on the downward slope of her life.

When her best friend Lillian announces her engagement, Annie now has further things on her mind as she is appointed maid of honor.

Lemire praises the film for capturing the “innate randomness” of a typical bridal party, and focusing on the female commonalities shared in attending weddings with “nothing in common…besides the bride.” ‘Bridesmaids,’ she says, is vastly superior to most wedding comedies in that it deals with these issues and others in a more honest way than past films that cater to the heavily clichéd screechy, jealous stereotypes of women—stereotypes that are often considered both demeaning and hurtful. ‘Bridesmaids’ trailed behind the blockbuster ‘Thor,’ but is still likely to be an early summer hit. The Rotten Tomatoes’ critics’ consensus describes the film as “a marriage of genuine characters, gross out gags, and pathos…a female-driven comedy that refuses to be boxed in as Kristen Wiig emerges as a real star.”
