The Black Press Institute provides University students the opportunity to hone their skills, deepen their understanding of current issues, and build their portfolios while writing for up to 15 million readers per week in the newsroom of America’s only national news service dedicated to serving Black community weeklies and dailies.

The Institute’s approach is intense and comprehensive, providing students with daily training and critiques from journalism professors and professional editors, arranging weekly editorial briefings on current issues, and facilitating formal and informal opportunities for students to network with ethnic and mainstream media leaders. The Institute’s internship programs places an emphasis on Black Press history and the freedom-focused tradition of advocacy journalism.
