A number of organizations have contacted Public Broadcasting Service (PBS) to ask us about a production deal they’ve been offered by producers of various television shows carrying titles such as American Milestones, Breakthroughs, In America TV, In Focus, The Journal, Biography, Giving Back, Impact PTV, Leading Edge, Learning About, Outlook TV, Outlook Television, and Vision Media or other such shows that may be introduced by well-known personalities such as James Earl Jones, Ben Kingsley, Martin Sheen, Joan Lunden, Jimmy Johnson, or other celebrities. From the information we have received from organizations contacted by these producers, the producer typically offers to create a 3-5 minute short program (or interstitial) which highlights the organization’s business. The producer asks the organization to pay for production costs ranging from $20,000 to $30,000, plus additional travel expenses in order to conduct on-site interviews. The organizations that call PBS have been led to believe that the program will be featured on “National Public Television” or that the program will be distributed to “PTV,” “Public Television” or to “PBS Stations.”

PBS wishes to clarify that it is not associated with these producers and does not endorse, distribute, review underwriting for, or otherwise have any business relationship pertaining to these shows. It is important to note that producers of shows distributed by PBS do not solicit fees from individuals or organizations in return for inclusion in their shows.

PBS cannot provide any information about if or when these shows produced for a fee receive any broadcast television time through public television stations, including PBS Member Stations, or any other outlet.

If you would like to contact us directly for more information, you may do so at: http://www.pbs.org/about/contact/viewer-services/

All final program scheduling decisions are determined locally by each of our member stations and it is possible that this show was acquired by your local public television station from a source other than PBS. Unlike the commercial television networks, which provide their local affiliates with a set program menu, PBS provides its member stations with shows from which they can choose and schedule independently.

    • The program is not a PBS program, but was purchased by your local station from an independent distributor.
    • The producers of the program have chosen not to have a website for various possible reasons.
    • A website for the program may exist, but is not part of PBS.org.

PBS generally holds the rights to its shows for three years following the original broadcast. After the PBS term of broadcast expires, the show rights revert to the producers, and PBS is therefore no longer able to distribute these expired shows to our member stations.

Since all final show decisions are made by local stations, and sometimes include shows from distributors other than PBS, we suggest you contact your local station for more information on their schedule. Contact information for PBS member stations can be found using the PBS Station Finder.

You can find information about many of the cooking shows featured on PBS stations by visiting the PBS Food website located at http://www.pbs.org/food.

Please note that these shows are not necessarily distributed by PBS. Unlike the commercial television networks, which provide their local affiliates with a set show menu, PBS provides its member stations with shows from which they can choose and schedule independently. PBS stations also obtain shows from independent producers and other distributors, which is often the case with cooking shows.

Please note that whether or not a cooking series publishes individual recipes on its website is a decision made by each show’s producers, not PBS. Due to copyright restrictions in the contract for cookbook publication, many cooking series post only a few sample recipes on their websites.

PBS Food pulls together thousands of recipes from our wealth of national, locally-produced, and KIDS shows to create a fully-searchable database. PBS Food has traveled across America to collect information on all your favorite food and cooking shows, as well as the best shows aired on your local station. The site also provides a directory of chefs and food blogs from PBS shows and local stations. Be sure to check out the PBS Food blog "Fresh Tastes," which is a celebration of food and cooking. The blog is authored by popular food bloggers Jenna Weber and Marc Matsumoto. PBS Food is expanding rapidly, so come back regularly for new recipes from your favorite shows.

Proposals are evaluated on an ongoing basis. They are judged on the quality of the idea, the credentials of the production team, the needs of the schedule, and the financial request to PBS. As you might imagine, dollars are limited, so producers are encouraged to seek outside sources of funding.

Proposals for shows may be submitted to PBS Programming Services at any time throughout the year and should be addressed to:

Usage of our videos in a public performance type of setting is dependent upon whether the shows one purchases come with AV (limited public performance) rights.

Many of our shows that are available for purchase at http://teacher.shop.pbs.org/ come with AV rights, which include the limited license to exhibit the show as long as no admission fee is charged, and the viewing is in accordance with the following guidelines:

    1. In-Room Use. Customer has the right to exhibit the Shows to an unlimited number of viewers where all viewers, monitor(s), and playback units are in the same room ("in-room use"). Such exhibition shall be in accordance with the Arrangement indicated on the Invoice and during the period applicable thereto. Customer acknowledges that the Shows may not be duplicated, broadcast, transmitted by cable, transmitted on any open circuit system, or otherwise transmitted in digital or analog form, unless otherwise specified herein or agreed to by PBS in writing.
    2. Limited Instructional Television Fixed Service ("Limited ITFS") and Closed-Circuit Television ("CCTV"). Unless otherwise specified the AV Program price includes the right to transmit or exhibit the Shows over ITFS and CCTV limited to transmission within a building, single campus, or cluster of buildings, where those rights are available.
    3. Digital/Wide Access Network. Shows MAY NOT be distributed through any wide access network (i.e., open cable, broadcast, LAN, Web, etc.), digitized, and/or placed on a digital server.

Under the Fair Use Guidelines of United States Copyright Law, teachers have rights to record any broadcast off television (any station) and use the recording for the next 10 days in the classroom. PBS has negotiated with content producers for an even longer period for most PBS shows in an attempt to facilitate the following:

    1. Teacher integration of shows into the curriculum when appropriate, rather than within ten days after broadcast;
    2. Teacher/School preview of a show by several teachers to facilitate a potential decision to purchase an extended license and/or a packaged video with Teacher Guide.

Most PBS shows have one year Educational Rights from the original broadcast date. This means that you can record a PBS show and show that recording in the classroom for one year following the date the show originally aired.

Information regarding the rights related to shows that have been recorded is available on our PBS LearningMedia website

If you would like to purchase a copy of a PBS show for educational use in the future, usage of our videos in a classroom setting is dependent upon whether the show comes with AV rights. To order a show, please contact Shop PBS at 1-800-531-4727 or for more information about PBS Educational Media, please visit the PBS Shop for Teachers website.

Items that include audio visual rights are designated as "AV" items and include the limited license to exhibit the show in accordance with the following guidelines:

    1. In-Room Use. Customer has the right to exhibit the Shows to an unlimited number of viewers where all viewers, monitor(s), and playback units are in the same room ("in-room use"). While over-the-air broadcasts reach beyond U.S. borders, online video is subject to geo-filtering, which restricts the areas that can view PBS content. PBS is legally obligated to ensure each show does not exceed its granted rights, which unfortunately eliminates international streaming ability for some PBS shows outside the U.S.

You may be hearing the Descriptive Video Service (DVS) option made available to audiences who are blind or visually impaired. You can turn this feature off and on fairly easily.

Most newer-model TVs with stereophonic sound systems are able to receive a Second Audio Program (SAP) which provides enriched verbal descriptions of what is heard and seen on a TV's primary audio and video channels. Most TVs and VCRs require you to select the SAP channel in order to receive and record DVS. The selector is usually labeled SAP, MTS, Audio 2, or Audio B on your TV panel, remote-control device, or on-screen menu. Un-selecting the SAP channel should eliminate the DVS option.

If you're not able to un-select the SAP channel, review your TV manual or contact a TV vendor who can guide you through the process. Like closed captioning, DVS was also pioneered by PBS to ensure the widest possible audience is served.

Some audio problems are the result of a difficulty or error that occurred during the show's production. A poor balance between background music and dialogue is usually related to production rather than transmission problems.

You can try switching from stereo to mono whenever there is such a problem, or switch off the "surround sound" or "enhanced" feature on your television. These steps tend to assist in counteracting the audio problem.

There are two different ways to contribute to PBS:

    1. Support your local PBS member station. By contributing at the local level, you support your station's ability to purchase the shows you enjoy, as well as to produce local shows and to serve as a vital educational and cultural resource within your community. Please contact your local PBS member station directly for more information. Contact information for PBS member stations can be found using the PBS Station Finder.
    2. Contribute directly to the national programming budget. By making a contribution to the PBS Foundation, the national mechanism for receiving gifts of all sizesyou are supporting PBS’ ability to acquire quality programming. Unfortunately, PBS is not able to assist with donation requests. As a non-profit entity, we do not have a budget to make contributions to other organizations or individuals.

What are the banners you see on PBS.org?

The banners you see on PBS.org are paid messages provided by companies that wish to support PBS’s online initiatives. While PBS makes every attempt to ensure that banners adhere to our specific content guidelines, please be aware that when you click on a banner, you will leave PBS.org. These sites may differ from PBS in editorial approach, technologies used, and privacy guidelines. It's important that you make yourself aware of other sites' privacy policies and your browser's security settings when navigating the Internet.

Why are there banners on pbs.org?

PBS is currently funded in a number of ways – from government agencies, foundations, associations, corporate sponsors, and most importantly, from viewer donations. In order to continue to provide access to a wide range of free, high-quality content and services, from television programs and Web sites to tools and training for teachers, PBS is always exploring new, responsible ways to expand our funding; the banners you see are one part of this effort. The companies that provide financial support for PBS.org do not have any control over, or involvement in, PBS' editorial process.

If I’m a company, how can I get my message on PBS.org?

PBS engages organizations through a variety of sponsorship opportunities, including our Web sites. If you are interested in learning more about how to reach our engaged and influential audience through sponsorship of PBS.org, please contact us.

    Feedback

We encourage you to provide any feedback you might have about banners on pbs.org. This feedback will inform how we evolve online sponsorship and other aspects of the site moving forward. Thank you in advance for your input.

Be sure to check that you are localized to the correct channel. Often, there are Spanish speaking channels associated with your local station so double check to be sure you are viewing the correct channel.

To change the channel, follow the instructions below:

      • After you have clicked Schedule (Figure 1.1) and are viewing your schedule, tap the channel (Figure 1.2) located in the upper left side of the screen.

In order for a video to be in the Resume section of the Watchlist where you can continue watching where you left off:

      • The video must be a full episode
      • You must have watched more than 5 minutes of the video.

If these requirements are not met, the video will not appear in the Resume section of the Watchlist. The video will, however, remain in the Saved and History sections of your Watchlist. From the Saved and History sections, a video must be played from the beginning. The video can only pick up where you left off if it is in the Resume section of the Watchlist.

We regret not being able to offer our supporters all of our online content.

If you have pressed play on a video and nothing happens, try checking your router. The instructions below demonstrate how to check the settings on a Netgear router but you can check on whatever router you have.

Find your router's username and password

      F1.

      • Depending on your router, the username and password to log into its control panel may be on the bottom (or side). Figure 1 illustrates where to find this information on a Netgear router.
      • Your router may or may not be a Netgear like the above image, in which case the format will look different depending on what model it is. If you can’t find something like that on your router, look for its model name and number. In the photo above, it would be a Netgear N900, Model number: WNDR4500. The name is in the middle, and the model number is to the right of the green box.

      Figure 1

      • Once you’ve found the model name and number of your router, open a browser and go to www.google.com.
      • Type “How to unblock sites on [model name, model number]” in the search textbox and search.
      • Results should include the user name and password for your router model (the user names and passwords are universal for the router, unlike Wifi passwords, which you personalize).

Log into your router's control panel with the username and password

      2. L

      • Once you've got your username and password, log into the router control panel by going to the website of the router’s control panel. Each router model has a different link. The link for your router can be found on the back or side of your router (in Figure 1 you can see the website http://www.routerlogin.net inside the green box). If it does not, it should be included in the results of the Google search, or you can do another search for “Control panel for [model name, model number].”
      • Once you are on the router login website, you will be asked to enter your router user name and password.
      • After you enter the name and password you will be directed to your router control panel. Look for an option to Unblock Websites, or an option named similarly. It may be behind an option for Security. Again, it depends on the router model, but it should be easy to find.

      Unblock the site www.doubleclick.net

      • Look for a site that says www.doubleclick.net and unblock it. Doubleclick is the site PBS uses to run advertisements on Roku. Unblocking it will allow your connection to access the site, letting the ads play, and then letting the videos play.
      • If you don’t see that site, try unblocking all of the sites. You may want to write down which sites your router was trying and later try adding them back one by one to diminish the likelihood of security breaches.
