User research program FAQ
What kind of participants are you looking for?
All kinds. You don’t need to be a Google user, computer expert, or technology enthusiast to sign up. Anyone who is over the age of 18 and has ever used the internet in any way can join the program.
I don’t live near a Google office. Can I still sign up?
Absolutely. Google regularly conducts remote research via computers and mobile devices. We want to hear from as many people as we can.
How soon will you contact me?
We want to make sure that the studies you participate in are a good fit for you. That’s why we can’t guarantee that everyone who applies will end up participating. If we do contact you, it may not be right away because we will be waiting for a study that’s a good match. We may contact you at any point as long as you remain registered.
If I sign up, will you send me spam or sell my information to other companies?
Why does the sign-up link send me to a Qualtrics website?

Participating in a study
What exactly will I be doing in these studies?
When you sign up, you can choose the study types that interest you the most. Here’s a quick breakdown of the different types of studies and how they work.
Remote usability study
In these studies, we’ll gather your feedback via a screen-sharing session with a researcher or a website where you can try something out on your own. You can be almost anywhere in the world, but you’ll need to have a high-speed internet connection.
Usability study at a Google office
These studies work best for people who live close to one of our offices. Typically, you’ll meet one-on-one with a Google researcher who’ll ask you some questions, have you use a new or existing product, and then get your feedback.
Giving feedback at a Google office
This works best for people who live close to one of our offices. Typically, you'll meet one-on-one with a Google Researcher who'll ask you some questions about your experiences with our products or technology in general.
To keep everyone safe during COVID-19, please check the invitation from your Google contact for relevant information on entering a Google office. You can reply directly to your invitation with any questions.
These studies require a small amount of activity every day for several days or weeks. Google researchers will ask you to respond to questions or take notes based on your experience using a product. You’ll do everything on your own smartphone, tablet, or laptop.
For these studies, we’ll simply send you a survey form to fill out. Please note that we don’t typically offer a gift for participating in a survey.
How long does a typical study take?
You’d normally spend between 60 and 90 minutes with a Google researcher for a usability study. Most sessions are held during local business hours, though you may be invited to participate at other times. If you’re participating in a study that takes place in person at a Google office, you’ll need to allow extra time to arrange your own travel.
What is a "Thank-you gift"?
This is Google's way of providing a gift as a way of saying thanks to people who participate in research studies, to help improve our products and experiences. We use 3 different suppliers to distribute our gifts: Tremendous, 360insights and Google Merchandise. Participants will be given notice when signing up for a study on their supplier options.
When will I receive my gift?
If your session is eligible for a thank-you gift, you should receive it three to five business days after completing your session. Look out for an email from email@example.com firstname.lastname@example.org or email@example.com depending on the supplier.
If it’s been more than five business days and you haven’t received your reward email, please check your spam and trash folders. If you’re still unable to retrieve your reward, please reach out to firstname.lastname@example.org for additional support.
Please note that not all study participants will receive a thank-you gift.
What’s available in the gift catalogs?
The Tremendous catalog offers a variety of retail options to choose from, as well as Visa International, Paypal, and Amazon gift cards.
The 360insights (Perks) catalog offers a limited variety of retail options to choose from, as well as PayPal, Visa, and Mastercard gift cards.
The online Google Merchandise Store offers branded products such as water bottles, hoodies and duffle bags. The online Google Merchandise Store does not offer Google hardware. The catalog is only available once a redemption voucher has been received.
The full catalog will become available when you redeem your gift from one of the selected suppliers.
Does my gift card expire?
Tremendous: The gift codes you receive from email@example.com expire three years from the date you receive your reward email.*
360insights (Perks): The gift codes from firstname.lastname@example.org never expire.*
*Reward options available from retailers in the two catalogs have expirations that vary by brand.
