Police have identified the body found Monday near Old Forge Road as a 45-year-old Middletown woman who was reported missing by her family on Jan. 25.
Lisa Shannon, formerly of 169 College St., Middletown, was last heard from Dec. 27, 2010, said Lt. Heather Desmond, a spokeswoman for Middletown police.
Her remains were found about 8 a.m. Monday by a man walking his dog near the Cromwell town line, police said. The man contacted Cromwell police to report that he had found a decomposing, partially buried body in an area commonly referred to as "the bean fields," Cromwell Police Chief Anthony J. Salvatore said.
The investigation was turned over to Rocky Hill police and the State Police Major Crime Squad. A family member who did not wish to be identified said authorities have opened a criminal investigation into Shannon's death.
The cause of death has not been determined, said a spokeswoman from the medical examiner's office.
