Could the code for DTML functionality be extracted from Zope and preserved as a product? That way any existing sites would not be broken. In fact, those users that still wanted to use DTML could install the product and go on as if nothing had been changed. But the "out-of-the-box" templating language would be ZTL. The only drawback I can see to this approach is a performance issue (perhaps DTML would be a bit slower, depending on the integration of the new product).

While our network was down we took some time to brainstorm and Ethan and Evan came up with a brilliant idea. For now there is no solid proposal, just a page of NotesOnZopeTemplates.
