Mac OS

[1] New Releases: Display Enabler 2.4.1; Convert2DOS 1.0; Macintosh DVD-Video Kit; International Versions of iMac Update 1.1 and iMac Firmware Update 1.0; Mac OS Update 8.5.1/Chinese Traditional and Simplified

Display Enabler 2.4.1 fixes a problem that sometimes occurs after Mac OS 8.5 is installed on a PowerBook G3 Series computer: ixMicro ix3D Road Rocket video cards no longer allow external monitors to sleep.

Convert2DOS 1.0 takes MacDraw Pro files and creates a set of files in an IBM-compatible format, allowing you to open your original MacDraw Pro files in ClarisDraw for Windows or ClarisImpact for Windows.

The Macintosh DVD-Video Kit contains a PowerBook G3 Series DVD-ROM Expansion Bay Module, a Macintosh PowerBook DVD-Video PC Card, and Apple DVD Player software. The DVD-ROM expansion module can play CD-ROM, audio CD, Photo CD, CD-i, and CD-R discs, as well as DVD discs. You can special-order the kit (M6664LL/B) by calling 800-795-1000 or visiting the Apple Store.

British, Danish, Dutch, Finnish, French, German, Italian, Japanese, Korean-Hangul, Norwegian, and Spanish versions of iMac Update 1.1 and iMac Firmware Update 1.0 were posted to the Apple web site this week, along with the Chinese Traditional and Simplified versions of Mac OS Update 8.5.1.

Aladdin Systems' StuffIt 5.0 compression format is now being accepted and widely distributed in all of CompuServe's Macintosh forums, further extending the new format. Only the free StuffIt Expander opens StuffIt 5.0 archives.

StuffIt Expander 5.1 from Aladdin Systems (available in February) will offer free access to all popular Mac OS and PC compressed and encoded files, including StuffIt 5.0, Zip, and UUEncode archives.

[6] Interactive Media Tool News: FullPixelSearch 3.0, CineSlider 4.2, iShell

FullPixelSearch 3.0 from Avian Systems is an image search and analysis program. This tool enables scientists, physicians, engineers, digital artists, and other users to automate the process of searching digital images for specific objects. It employs fuzzy logic and other techniques to recognize and find objects automatically. Version 3.0 implements batch processing and can generate results by searching large directories of images for user-defined features.

CineSlider 4.2 is the latest version of OneApp Software's slide show and presentation tool for multimedia files, QuickTime movies, sounds, and images. It lets you personalize a presentation with color backgrounds, patterns, a soundtrack, and names of the images or movies that are being shown. This version features a floating, full-featured movie control palette.

iShell from Tribeworks is a high-end multimedia development tool that exploits the full power of QuickTime and allows you to create powerful applications that dynamically update from the web. iShell is free to anybody who registers. Company News

[9] iMac Tops Fourth-Quarter PC Sales in United States
Apple's iMac computer was the top-selling PC through retail and mail order channels during the 1998 holiday season (October through December 1998), according to PC Data's December Retail/Mail Order Hardware Report. The iMac accounted for 6.2 percent of all unit sales in the fourth quarter, as well as 7.2 percent of the dollar volume. "Not only was iMac the leading SKU during the holiday buying season, but it is the only product to break into the top five best-selling PCs for five months straight," said Stephen Baker, senior hardware analyst at PC Data.

[10] Apple's HAL Commercial to Air During Super Bowl
Apple and its advertising agency, TBWA/Chiat/Day, have created a 60-second television commercial to announce that the Macintosh does not suffer from the Y2K problem that is plaguing the rest of the world's computers. In Apple's creative tradition, the message is delivered by HAL, the computer from Stanley Kubrick's classic motion picture 2001: A Space Odyssey.

[11] Apple Asia-Pacific News
Apple's Asia-Pacific growth in the first quarter was 33 percent, in spite of economic problems in the area. Second-quarter growth in the region is expected to be more in line with that of Europe and the United States (55 and 54 percent, respectively), according to Graham Long, president of Apple's Asia-Pacific operations.

In addition, Apple has just moved its Australian-based Asia-Pacific headquarters and its Hong Kong marketing and advertisement departments to Singapore.

This week Apple officially launched the new iMac and blue-and-white G3 Power Macintosh computers in Singapore.

Marketing Opportunities

[12] Check Your Macintosh Products Guide Listings
Now that the flurry of activity surrounding MACWORLD Expo has subsided, you might want to check that all your new product releases are correctly listed in Apple's Macintosh Products Guide. (There is no charge for this service.)

[13] In-Box Resource Guide and Ad Discounts from Co-Media Marketing
When it comes to print advertising, the best return on your advertising investment comes when you run your ads in highly focused, targeted mediums. Wouldn't it be great if you could get your ad included in the boxes of some of the Mac OS platform's most popular products? Now you can reach this target market through Co-Media Marketing, the producer of in-box resource guides for a wide range of popular products from FileMaker, Umax, and Corel. In association with the Apple Developer Connection, Co-Media Marketing is offering generous in-box resource guide ad space discounts to all ADC Select and Premier members. What's more, Co-Media Marketing can also produce a self-funding in-box resource guide for your product line. In many cases, depending on size of the print run, there is no cost to your company. And Co-Media Marketing takes care of securing all ads, art, and ad copy.

This special promotion cannot replace, nor can it be combined with, any existing contracts with Co-Media Marketing. Worldwide members wishing to take advantage of this special offer should contact Gary Munsinger at gary@co-media.com or 1-381-375-3800.
