GM Food - Introduction |
Genetically Modified Organisms (GMOs)
and Genetically Modified Micro-organisms (GMMs) can be defined
as organisms (and micro-organisms) in which the genetic material
(DNA) has been altered in a way that does not occur naturally
by mating or natural recombination.
On 28th January 2004 the Commission
held an orientation debate on a Communication
taking stock of all the EU policy and legislative initiatives
relating to GMOs.
In its
White Paper on Food Safety the Directorate-General Health
and Consumer Protection announced various measures to tighten
and streamline the Community rules governing novel foods and
foods containing or derived from genetically modified organisms.
