Feed Controls
- Introduction |
The production
of animal feed is one of the most important sectors of activity
in agriculture. Approximately 120 million tonnes of feedingstuffs
are annually produced in the EU. Initially, the rules on animal
feed from the 1970's put the emphasis on furthering productivity
of livestock farming, facilitating the free circulation of
feedingstuffs in the internal market and providing information
to the stock breeders on feedingstuffs' characteristics. Today,
emphasis has shifted more towards the protection of human
and animal health, and to some extent to environmental protection.
Community legislation on Animal Feed includes:
Rules on marketing and labelling of
feed materials, of compound feedingstuffs, of feedingstuffs
intended for particular nutritional purposes, of bioproteins
and of genetically modified feed
Rules on authorisation, marketing and
labelling of feed additives
Rules on undesirable substances in
feedingstuffs (mycotoxins, heavy metals etc.)
Rules on approval and registration
of animal feed producing establishments
Rules on official inspections in animal
nutrition.

feedingstuffs see: Scientific Committee on Animal Nutrition.
For reports of the meetings between
the Commission and the Member States representatives who
discuss regulatory issues on animal feed see: Standing
Committee for FeedingStuffs. |
