GM Plants & Seed - Introduction

The seed legislation requires that GM seed varieties have to be authorised in accordance with Directive 90/220/EEC - now repealed by directive 2001/18/EC - before they are included in the Common Catalogue and marketed in the EU.

Of the eighteen genetically modified organisms authorised in accordance with Directive 90/220/EEC, eight are authorised for the purpose of use in feedingstuffs. They are four maize varieties, three rape varieties and one soy variety.
