The Economic and Social Committee was set up by the Treaty of Rome (1957) to enable the various economic and social interest groups to form their views on matters of Community interest known to the Council and the Commission. It consists of 222 members organized in three groups - employers, workers and various activities. Members are proposed by governments and appointed in a personal capacity by the Council of the Union for four years. Consultation of the Committee is optional or compulsory depending on the case.
Every month the ESC-Info reports on the Committee's activities.
