Following the meeting of Ministers and Higher Authorities of Science and Technology of South America to which UNESCO and COMEST were invited, the Rio de Janeiro Declaration on Ethics in Science and Technology was agreed and signed on 4 December 2003, reflecting the commitment of these Governments and societies to the growing need for an ethical approach to scientific and technological advances. The Declaration was also endorsed by the Ministers of Science and Technology of the Community of Portuguese Speaking Countries (CPLP), who met in Rio de Janeiro on 5 December 2003.
