Instructions for obtaining permission to use AMA copyrighted material follow. Permission requests may be submitted by fax, e-mail or regular mail; approval for requests will be issued by fax, e-mail or regular mail.

General Permissions Information:

  1. Requests may be submitted by regular mail, fax or e-mail. Please include full name, address, phone number, fax number, and e-mail address. Phone Permission Requests are not accepted.
  2. Submit only one request for each intended use. Duplicate requests cause confusion and extra work thus adding to the processing time.
  3. Blanket permissions are not issued. It is necessary to submit a permission request for each intended use.
  4. Permission will not be granted until the article has been published in JAMA, the Archives Journals, or AMNews.
  5. Permission fees are determined by the intended use, number of copies, and other factors.
  6. Requests to grant permission to reproduce 100 or fewer free standing copies of the full article in print for classroom or other educational institutional purposes should be sent to the Copyright Clearance Center.
  7. Permission is not granted to place the full article on other web sites.
  8. Requests to grant permission to reproduce 100 or more free standing copies of the full article for classroom or other educational institutional purposes should be sent to Mr Joseph Rekash.
  9. Free standing article requests for use by commercial entities should be sent to Ms Wanda Bartolotta.
  10. Requests to reproduce charts, tables, figures, graphs or other illustrations, abstracts, or quotes will be considered for print and online uses.
  11. Permission is not granted to place the full text of JAMA, Archives Journals, or AMNews articles on other web sites.
  12. The details of any modifications, adaptations, or changes in content must be received by AMA before we can process your request.
  13. Most requests are handled within 6 to 8 working days once we have the needed information.
  14. If you are working with a specific deadline, please highlight that in your request, and we will attempt to meet your needs.
  15. Permission is never granted for use of JAMA, the Archives Journals, or AMNews for endorsements, implied or otherwise, of products or services.
  16. Permission will not be granted to use content from JAMA, the Archives Journals, or AMNews as part of advertisements or advertising supplements.
  17. Requests are not granted to reproduce the full article from JAMA, the Archives Journals, or AMNews in other journals.
  18. Requests for unlocked PDF files will be considered from AMA members and those with paid subscriptions to JAMA and the Archives Journals. These requests will be considered for educational noncommercial requests only. Turnaround will be provided within 24 hours of the request.

Please include all of the following information in your permission request letter (omissions will cause your request to be delayed or rejected):

Information Required for a Permissions Request:

  • Name and title
  • Complete mailing address including organization name, telephone, fax, and e-mail (if available)
JAMA, Archives Journals, or AMNews Content Information:
  • Indicate whether your request is for JAMA, a specific Archives Journal or American Medical News
  • Article title(s)
  • Corresponding author of each article
  • Volume number(s) and issue dates(s)
  • Issue date
  • First page number of each article
  • Indicate the items that you wish to use, ie, the specific charts, tables, figures, graphs, or other illustrations, abstracts, quotes, or full articles.
Intended Use of your Permission Request:
  • Title of your work
  • Author/editor/compiler
  • Publisher with full address
  • Edition number
  • Publication Year
  • Approximate press run of work that includes full text JAMA, Archives Journals, and American Medical News
  • Form of reproduction (print, online, language)
  • Sponsorship, funding, or retail price (if a book)
  • Intended audience(s)
Permission Requests for Unlocked PDFs
  • Please supply your American Medical Association membership number or JAMA or Archives Journal subscriber number.
  • Requests are granted for educational noncommercial uses only.
