Ways to Give

donate

Everyone has unique financial considerations and different reasons for giving. As an individual there are many ways you can support the Royal BC Museum.

A direct gift is one in which every dollar goes to work the moment it is given. You can give cash or a non-cash asset, such as securities or real estate, and receive a donation receipt for your gift. You may also choose to establish an endowed fund or contribute to an existing Royal BC Museum fund. Direct gifts may support a wide variety of activities. Many of our donors give gifts of cash. For many it is as easy as writing a cheque or using a credit card to make their annual or monthly gift.

We are accountable to you! The Royal BC Museum Foundation is a registered charity (Charitable registration #11893 3241 RR0001). Charitable receipts will be issued for tax purposes. Click here to learn more about the Donor Bill of Rights.

Cash gifts

There are three easy ways for you to make your gift:

1. Make a gift online through CanadaHelps. By making a gift online, you will receive an electronic receipt immediately from CanadaHelps and this is an easy, fast and secure way to give today! CanadaHelps also offers a monthly giving option.

2. You can contact the Foundation office at: 250-387-3710 and make a gift by credit card. You can make a single gift or set up a monthly gift. Monthly giving is a convenient and affordable way for you to give and enables us to keep our administrative costs low.

Gifts of securities

Gifts of securities are an easy way to give and protect BC’s history while receiving significant tax benefits.

Recent changes to the Income Tax Act have eliminated the income tax on capital gains generated from the sale of publicly listed securities, if those securities are donated to a registered charity prior to sale. In addition, donors will receive a charitable tax receipt for the full market value of the securities, which can be used to further reduce income tax payable. Donating securities directly to the Foundation provides donors with a greater tax advantage than selling the securities and donating the cash directly.

Planned gifts

Create a legacy of inspiration for future generations.

Gift planning helps you achieve your financial goals while also supporting the meaningful work of the museum and archives. The Royal BC Museum protects and shares British Columbia’s past to inform the now and guide the future. With a gift in your will, you help the museum and archives educate, inspire and entertain our visitors.

Your contribution helps build a healthy financial future for the Royal BC Museum, allowing it to protect and expand its collections, build learning experiences and inspire future generations.

By committing to a future gift to the Royal BC Museum you can:

  • Reduce Taxes on your Estate
  • Provide Income for Life
  • Eliminate Tax on Capital Gains
  • Commemorate a Loved One

A planned gift ensures your family is taken care of and allows you to support the work of the Royal BC Museum beyond your lifetime. The decision about your gift can be made now, but the transfer of the gift usually happens in the future.

We strongly recommend donors seek professional advice from their legal and financial advisors when considering making a planned gift. Your lawyer will craft the Will clause language to meet your needs, and your financial advisor will be able to advise you as to the most tax effective way to make this gift.

When you are considering making a gift to the Royal BC Museum Foundation, we would be more than happy to meet with you and recommend next steps. If you have a tax or legal advisor we would be pleased to talk to them with you.

A bequest

A charitable bequest through your estate is a way of providing a gift in the future, while reducing your taxable estate. You can leave the Royal BC Museum Foundation a specific dollar amount, a specific asset, or portion of the residue of your estate.

Charitable remainder trusts

If you have assets that you would consider gifting to the Royal BC Museum Foundation in your will but would like to receive the income for life and the tax benefits today, a charitable trust arrangement may be the answer.

A charitable remainder trust is an irrevocable trust that pays income to one or more individual beneficiaries for life or a term of years. The principal of the trust reverts to the Royal BC Museum Foundation upon the trust’s termination.

Life insurance

If you have an older life insurance policy you no longer need or if you want to make a large gift but you would prefer not to make a cash gift, consider making the Royal BC Museum Foundation the owner of your life insurance policy. You will receive a charitable tax receipt for the cash value of the policy and any premiums paid. In addition, you will have the added comfort of knowing the Royal BC Museum Foundation will benefit from your significant future gift. The Foundation can also be named the beneficiary of a life insurance policy.

Join our Royal BC Circle

We invite everyone who makes a planned gift to join our Royal BC Circle. The Royal BC Circle was established to recognize donors during their lifetime. As a Royal BC Circle member, you will enjoy special events such as annual celebrations; opportunities to get up close and personal with curators, museum staff and our collections; and recognition in our annual report.

Make a gift in honour of a friend or family member

For a family member or loved one whose life has been impacted by the Royal BC Museum, a gift in their honour or in tribute, or in lieu of a gift at Christmas or their birthday, is a perfect way to show you care. We would be happy to send a card to the honouree alerting them of the gift made in their name, and will work with you on giving them something special from the museum and archives.

Make a gift through the Provincial Employee Community Services Fund

All Provincial Employees can make a gift through payroll deduction or direct a one-time gift through the Provincial Employee Community Services Fund campaign. The Royal BC Museum Foundation is on the list of Donor Choice charities. The code is: DC0718 – Friends of the Royal BC Museum.
