The physical and spiritual home of UK science

A fitting home for UK (Ariel) 1 satellite Engineering model
The six satellites of the UK series were launched in US rockets between 1962 and 1979. UKs 1 and 2 were built by the US but flew experiments supplied by British universities. UKs 3 to 6 were built entirely in the UK.

UK Ariel 1 satelliteUK 1 was successfully launched as the Ariel 1 Satellite by a Thor-Delta rocket on 26 April 1962. It was designed to explore the upper atmosphere and to make measurements of solar radiation and charged particles. It succeeded in transmitting scientific data until a nuclear explosion test, high in the atmosphere on 9 July 1962, interfered with its signal.
