Provincial
archaeology programs are designed to encourage and facilitate
the protection, conservation and public appreciation of British
Columbia's archaeological resources as mandated by the Heritage
Conservation Act. Archaeological services are delivered through
two program areas:
- Archaeological
Planning and Assessment, Registries Department,
administers a permit system under the Act, represents archaeological
resource interests on review committees established under
the Environmental Assessment Act, and provides archaeological
resource input to the development of provincial Land and Resource
Management Plans.
- Archaeology
and Recreation Inventory, Resource Information Department,
administers the Provincial Heritage Register under the
Heritage Conservation Act, and records, maintains, and distributes
heritage resource and recreational information. This information
supports land use planning and impact assessments at the provincial,
regional, and local levels, and is typically supplied to private
industry, other government agencies, first nations, archaeologists,
and the general public.
