Translated editions of the Soviet collection of documents and materials regarding foreign policy from 22 June 1941 through the end of December 1944—originally published in 1946—are now available. Probably a wise decision to exclude Soviet foreign policy leading up to June 1941.

24 November 2021

The best history of the French 1st Army in Northwest Europe in 1944 and 1945 is the book written by its commanding general, but it's not easy to locate a copy of the 1952 English edition. Fortunately, Jean de Lattre de Tassigny's classic The History of the French First Army has now been reprinted by Routledge.

News from Poland
15 November 2021

We recently discovered the Mussolini's War series of books from Poland. Written and self-published by Marek Sobski, these titles—two so far—are researched largely in Italian sources, written in Polish, and translated into English. East Africa 1940-1941 Land Campaign: The Italian Army Defends the Empire in the Horn of Africa was published last year and Mussolini's Eastern Crusade: The Italian Expeditionary Corps in Operation Barbarossa two months ago. Next on the list? A volume covering the campaign on the Italian-French border in 1940. Definitely worth a look for anyone interested in Italian forces and operations.

World War II Sea War
4 November 2021

The World War II Sea War series from Donald Bertke and associates was finally concluded with volume 17 earlier this year. Now the team is adding "updates and corrections" volumes. The next one, volume 19, will cover March 1941 through December 1941 and is scheduled for publication early next year. We're told in upcoming volumes the additional material for each month—just the additional material—will exceed all the material originally published for that month in volume 5. (December 1941 through March 1942.) "I have collected a huge amount of Japanese ship data that arrived too late to get into the early volumes, so you now get an even better understanding of the Japanese ship movements as they rapidly took over the Dutch East Indies, the Solomon Islands, and New Guinea. I also found more US, New Zealand, Royal Navy, German U-boat, and Royal Indian Navy updates. These 'update and correction' volumes will greatly fill in data missing from many of these early volumes."

News from Mark Reardon
2 November 2021

Mark sends this update about his upcoming The USAAF in North Africa (working title):

"I completed drafts of the introduction and prologue as of the last week of October 2021. The former explains my motivation for writing the book as well as my methodology when it comes to determining aerial combat results. The latter provides readers with an overview of the four air forces that fought in Tunisia, with emphasis on the USAAF, how it operated with the RAF, and how it fared against the Luftwaffe and to a lesser extent the Regia Aeronautica. I will start the first of the core narrative chapters before Christmas 2021. That particular chapter will set the strategic scene, deal with the planning and execution of the Allied TORCH landings in North Africa on 8 November 1942, and detail the evolving deployment/redeployment of RAF, USAAF, Luftwaffe and Regia Aeronautica forces in theater. My working core narrative outline as currently envisioned has a total of seventeen chapters, some of which will cover action in Libya where the Ninth Air Force provided support to General Bernard Law Montgomery's Eighth Army and Air Marshal Coningham's Western Desert Air Force (WDAF). Interestingly, BOTH the Ninth Air Force and Twelfth Air Force rendered support to the British in Libya, in large part because the fundamentally tactical nature of the WDAF and limited range of Supermarine Spitfires. As a result, USAAF P-38s were taking off from Algeria, flying across Tunisia, and strafing retreating Afrika Korps columns in western Libya! There were RAF Halifaxes and Liberators in theater, but the Air Staff in London initiated the process of transferring them to other theaters once they realized that the USAAF would strike targets of interest to the British."

Happy birthday
15 September 2021

Or happy anniversary. Or something like that.

On 15 September 1995 we posted our first tidbit about WWII-related books, a brief note about new offerings from the Military History Book Club. That was twenty-six years ago.

Much has changed since then—in the publishing industry and in our hardware and software—but almost every day we've added another tidbit or two about WWII-related books. Take a look at our archives from 1995 through 2021 if you want to see how we've evolved over the years.

We offer thanks to all the authors, publishers, editors, booksellers, and visitors who have helped us with this site during our first twenty-six years, and we look forward to providing daily doses of news and information about WWII-related books for many more years.

In memoriam
18 August 2021

From Edward Rogers: "It is with great sadness that I have to report the death of my colleague Larry Hickey who passed away on Saturday, August 14th at his home in Boulder, Colorado. He was an aviation historian and publisher who dedicated the past forty years of his life to researching and publishing the history of the air war in the Southwest Pacific. His first publication was the landmark 1984 book, Warpath Across the Pacific: The Illustrated History of the 345th Bombardment Group.

"Larry's staff at IHRA and myself are busy finalizing volume one of the history of the 3rd BG & 27th BG in WWII (1941-1942).

"I will forward his obituary once it becomes available."
