Brewster Kahle

President and Founder

Schooled at MIT, Brewster designed supercomputers at Thinking Machines Corporation in the 1980's. In 1989, he formed the WAIS project to take commercial advantage of the growing Internet.

As the inventor of the WAIS (Wide Area Information Servers) system and founder of WAIS Inc. Brewster pioneered publishing on the net. Some of WAIS' clients included Encyclopaedia Britannica, New York Times, and the Government Printing Office. WAIS Inc. was acquired by America Online in June 1995.
