About 1 Area Support Group

1 ASG is Land Force Western Areaís support formation. The Area support concept provides for the management of support delivery and realty asset management for Army resources from Thunder Bay, Ontario in the East to Victoria, British Columbia in the West.

Throughout this area, support is provided to most Department of National Defence agencies and assigned dependencies beyond each unitís integral support capabilities.

1 ASG has four Area Support Units located in Shilo, Manitoba, Edmonton and Calgary, Alberta, and Chilliwack, British Columbia to provide local support. Larger assignments are handled by CFB/ASU Edmonton, which has the most resources.

1 General Support Battalion, based in Edmonton, provides transportation, supply and workshop support to field units as well as static support to ASU Edmonton when in Garrison.

1 ASG has two signal squadrons, 742 Sig Sqn in Edmonton and 731 Sig Sqn in Shilo, to provide a wide variety of signals, information technology and telecommunication support to supported units.

1 ASG also has the Royal Canadian Artillery Band, the Canadian Forces Service Prison and Detention Barracks, and a Dispute Resolution Centre under command.

1 Area Support Group is commanded by a Colonel and has a staff of approximately 70 in the Group Headquarters. The entire Group is made up of approximately 1700 military and civilian personnel.

"The mission of 1 Area Support Group is to enable the success of those we support."
