The New Balance Canberra Marathon was established in 1976 and is the oldest city marathon in Australia. It is owned by the ACT Cross Country Club Inc and has been managed since 1980 by Cundy Sports Marketing.
More information on the ACT Cross Country Club Inc. can be found at www.webathletics.com.au Cundy Sports Marketing is owned and managed by Dave Cundy and Fran Seton. Dave is Australias most experienced marathon director. As well as being Race Director in Canberra since 1980, he was also Road Events Manager at SOCOG from 1997- 2000 and is now the Technical Director of the Gold Coast Marathon.
At SOCOG he was responsible for designing the Olympic marathon course, organising The Host City Marathon in April 2000, and organising the Olympic marathons, Olympic race walks and Paralympic Marathon.
Dave gained a lot of his marathon experience by running marathons and networking with race directors around the world. Dave has finished each of the 31 marathons that he started with a best time in the Big M Melbourne Marathon in 1981 of 2.41.33.
He has run the New York, Chicago, Honolulu and Auckland marathons and also gained event management experience by working with the teams responsible for the Atlanta Olympic Marathon, Kuala Lumpur Commonwealth Games Marathon and Seville World Championship Marathon. He is also the Public Relations Manager (South Pacific) for the Association of International Marathons and Road Races (AIMS).
He has also managed many Australian teams which has provided exposure to events such as the London Marathon, and World Cross Country Championships in Boston (USA), Amorebieta (Spain) and Cape Town (South Africa).
Fran is also an active runner, preferring the shorter distances. From 1997-2000 she worked with SOCOG and IBM on the Olympic results systems. Her work took her around the world, where she met with each of the world sporting governing bodies to determine their requirements for the Olympic results system.
At the time of the Games, she managed the results systems for triathlon and boxing. She also worked on The Host City Marathon and the Olympic and Paralympic marathons. At Host City she managed the elite athletes and during the Games had a prime viewing position while handling communications from the lead vehicle.
Cundy Sports Marketing also has a contract with the Gold Coast Marathon. As of 2001, Dave is the Technical Director for that event and Fran is Elite Athlete Manager.
Both Dave and Fran are IAAF course measurers. Dave has been an IAAF Grade A course measurer since 1986. In 1996 he was appointed to the position of IAAF/AIMS Course Measurement Administrator for Asia and Oceania. In that role he is responsible for organising and approving the measurement of all the major road races in Asia and Oceania.
Following her measurement of the Sydney 2000 Olympic marathon and race walks courses, Fran was upgraded to IAAF Grade B course measurer status, becoming only the third woman in the world to reach this level.
