Kenan Evren was born in Alaşehir, Manisa in 1918. He completed his primary and
secondary education in Alaşehir, Manisa, Balıkesir and İstanbul. He graduated
from Maltepe Military High School.
He graduated from the Military Academy in 1938 and the Staff College in 1949. He
served at various levels in the armed forces as an artillery staff officer.
Kenan Evren served, first as the director of the Operations and Training
Department, and later as the staff commander of the Ninth Turkish Brigade in
Korea. After being promoted as brigadier in 1964, he served at all levels of the
high command, became an army commander and commander of the land forces, and
later chief of general staff in March 1978. He commanded the 1980 military
takeover and assumed the functions of the head of state as the chairman of the
National Security Council.
Following the adoption of the Constitution by a referendum held on 7 November
1982, which also involved ratification of his presidency, Kenan Evren became
Turkey's seventh president. His term ended on 9 November 1989.
Kenan Evren married Sakine in 1944 and has three children.
