The International Workshop on Parallel Algorithms and Software for CFD is co-sponsored by CERCA (Centre de Recherche en Calcul Appliqué), CRM (Centre de Recherches Mathématiques, Université de Montréal), Département d'informatique et de recherche opérationnelle (Université de Montréal), Silicon Graphics Inc., and Environment Canada. The two-day workshop will be held at CERCA. We propose in the workshop to bring together software and algorithm developers, and researchers working in the CFD domain.

Background

CFD problems such as numerical weather modeling, simulation of flows around aircraft and vehicles, and oil reservoir simulations are among the major clients of High Performance Computing Technology. These problems consume the bulk of available supercomputer cycles worldwide. The arrival of distributed-memory massively parallel processors (MPPs) had promised a dramatic increase in processing speed and computer memory available for the applications. Many researchers have demonstrated that their CFD applications can be ported to MPPs with a significant speed-up. Despite these facts, parallel computing has not yet gained a widespread acceptance in the scientific and engineering communities. One of the reasons for that is the lack of software to support the CFD applications. Nowdays, more attention is being paid to portability and reusability of parallel software, and the vendors have to conform with such standards as the PVM, MPI, or HPF, and provide their efficient implementation. In order to make the massively parallel computing practical for the industrial applications, it is necessary to develop scientific libraries to facilitate development of parallel CFD applications. Distributed-memory parallel architectures often require substantial algorithmic changes and have stimulated development of new approaches. The goal of the proposed workshop is to bring together the developers of the algorithms and software for the MPPs and the users applying the MPP technology for the CFD problems in order to facilitate the practical use of this technology.
