at Comic-Con 2004


Ray Bradbury Renowned author and Comic-Con Special Guest Ray Bradbury
Longtime visitors to Comic-Con International in San Diego know that the twin worlds of science fiction and fantasy have always been part of the show's great line-up of guests and programming. From Ray Bradbury appearing at the very first Comic-Con to Neil Gaiman, R. A. Salvatore and oh, yeah, that Bradbury guy again in 2003, 34 years later, the event has seen a stellar assortment of the very best authors and artists. Well, all of that changed in 2004, with the most impressive line-up of writers and artists ever!

In addition to Comic-Con special guests Kevin J. Anderson, Greg Bear, Harry Harrison, and Rebecca Moesta, authors appearing at the show included Steven Barnes, David Brin, Terry Brooks, Peter David, Minister Faust, Raymond E. Fiest, Andy Fox, Howard Hendrix, Nancy Holder, Alexander Irvine, Robert Jordan, Douglas Kearney, Greg Keyes, China Miéville, Christopher Paolini, John Ringo, James Rollins, S. M. Stirling, Mark Cotta Vaz, Margaret Weis and Timothy Zahn. Add to this another appearance by the dean of science fiction writers, Ray Bradbury on Saturday, July 25. Most of these authors appeared on panels, and signing afterwards, either in the Comic-Con Autograph Area, or at various booths (including Del Rey/Random House) in the Exhibit Hall.

Dragonlance with Margaret Weis.

New Kids in the Universe - Fresh Voices of Speculative Fiction. Panelists included: Alexander Irvine (One King, One Soldier); Lorna Freeman (Covenants); Howard Hendrix (The Labyrinth Key); China Miéville (Iron Council); Minister Faust (Coyote Kings of the Space-Age Bachelor Pad); and Andy Fox (Bride of the Fat White Vampire) and moderator Chris Schluep, Del Rey Editor.

Way Beyond Little Green Men - People of Color in Speculative Fiction. Panelists included: Steven Barnes (Star Wars: The Cestus Deception); Minister Faust (Coyote Kings of the Space-Age Bachelor Pad); Pam Noles (Dark Matter: Reading the Bones); Douglas Kearney (Dark Matter: Reading the Bones); and unofficial participant Tananarive Due (The Living Blood) and moderator Betsy Mitchell, VP & Editor-in-Chief for Del Rey Books.

Kicking Serious Butt: Action and Adventure in SF and Fantasy. Panelists included: John Ringo (Emerald Sea); Special Guest Harry Harrison (Stars And Stripes Triumphant); James Rollins (Sandstorm); Robert Jordan (The Wheel of Time: New Spring); S.M. Stirling (Dies the Fire); Raymond E. Feist (King of Foxes); Steve Saffel, Editorial Director of Media Projects for Del Rey Books and moderator Maryelizabeth Hart.

Friday, July 23:


Painting the Big Picture - Speculative Fiction on a Grand Scale. Panelists included: Kevin J. Anderson, Multiple Hugo and Nebula Award-winning author Greg Bear (Dead Lines); Robert Jordan (The Wheel of Time: New Spring); Special Guest Harry Harrison (Stars And Stripes Triumphant); and David Brin (The Life Eaters), and moderator Rebecca Moesta.

Beyond 'Once Upon a Time' - Building On the Tropes of Fantastic. Fiction Panelists included: Nancy Holder (Spirited); Christopher Paolini (Eragon); Greg Keyes (The Briar King); Terry Brooks (Tanequil); Margaret Weis (The Dragon's Son); and Nick Mamatas (Move Underground) and moderator Maryelizabeth Hart.

Also featuring Star Wars authors on Clone Wars fiction and continuity and spotlights on special guests Harry Harrison and Greg Bear.

Witches, Vamps, and Robots, Oh My! The Fiction and Facts of Fan Favorites. Panelists included: Paul Ruditis (Buffy the Vampire Slayer: The Watcher's Guide, Vol. 3); Mark Cotta Vaz (Caught in the Web: Behind the Scenes of Spider-Man 2); Allie Costa (Buffy the Vampire Slayer: The Watcher's Guide, Vol. 3); Lisa Clancy, the editor of the Buffy/Angel book series for 6 years; Max Allan Collins (CSI and CSI: Miami); Nancy Holder (Buffy/Angel: Heat); Keith R.A. DeCandido (Dragon Precinct); Lee Goldberg (Diagnosis Murder: The Shooting Script), Rebecca Moesta and Kevin J. Anderson (Young Jedi Knights), and moderator Maryelizabeth Hart (Angel: The Casefiles, Vol. 1 and Buffy the Vampire Slayer: The Watcher's Guide, Vol. 2).

What If? - Looking At Our World's Alternate History.
Panelists include: S.M. Sunday, July 25:


Fantastic Fiction for All Ages - the Young Adult Market.
Panelists included: Timothy Zahn (Star Wars: Survivor's Quest); Jeff Mariotte (Witch Season: Summer); Emily Drake (Magickers: the Dragon Guard); Sherwood Smith (Wren to the Rescue); and Matt Forbeck (Secret of the Spiritkeeper) and moderator Maryelizabeth Hart. Plus a special look at author Kevin J. Anderson and The Dune Novels

And wasn't all!


In addition to the authors listed above, Comic-Con boasted one of the largest gatherings of science fiction and fantasy artists ever! Special guests Roger Dean and Donato Giancola headed up an all-star group with a special section in the Exhibit Hall all their own. Other artists appearing at Comic-Con included Charles Vess, Michael Kaluta, Amy Brown, Brian Froud, Wendy Froud, Toby Froud, Robert Gould, Ruth Thompson, Brom, Ciruelo Jeff Watts and more. Exhibitors included Green Man Press, Chimera, Ruth Thompson's Tarnished Images, Imaginosis and Ciruelo - Fantasy Art. Spotlights on our special guests Roger Dean (Thursday, July 22) and Donato Giancola (Sunday, July 25), plus a special drawing demo by Mr. Giancola (Thursday, July 22) and a once-in-a-lifetime panel uniting some of the top names in art on Friday, July 23 from 11:30 a.m. to 1:00 p.m.
