Indigenous Peoples of the World

International Day of Indigenous Peoples 9 AugustThe United Nations declared the decade 1994-2004 the International Decade of the Worlds' Indigenous Peoples. The International Day of Indigenous Peoples is 9 August every year.

You can visit the National Museum of the American Indian at the Smithsonian, and find out about the peoples of the Arctic Circle including the Inupiat of Alaska, the Crees of Northern Quebec, the Nenets and Khanty of north-west Siberia, the Aleut of the Aleutian islands, the Innu of Quebec and Labrador, the Sami of Northern Europe and the people of Iceland.
