Release Notes
  1. The homepage is not the standard blog template (”index.php”), but a custom template I’ve included called “homepage.php”. So after installation you’ll want to first visit your control panel and create a new flat page called “News”. Then create another page called “Home” and be sure to apply our new “homepage” template (also described here) via dropdown menu. Then visit Options->Reading and assign your Home and News templates accordingly.
  2. The path to the RSS button will need to change from my site to yours:
    <?php wp_list_authors('exclude_admin=1&show_fullname=1&hide_empty=1&feed_image=http://www.darrenhoyt.com/images/icon_rss.gif&feed=XML'); ?>

  3. The various query_posts functions refer to specific ID numbers. They will need to change to reflect the ID numbers in your own database, example:
    <?php query_posts('showposts=1&cat=4'); ?>

  4. For the layout to work, image dimensions must be exact. The large Lead Story image should be 496×237 while the Feature thumbnails should be 85×75 each.
  5. Each feature uses the the_author_posts_link function. Notice that this function only prints the author’s first name, and unfortunately there are no parameters that will allow both first and last name. Therefore each author should use his full name (”John Doe”) when registering an author account with Wordpress.
  6. The thumbnail image you see in the author bio box is not a gravatar. It’s a little hack I created which basically looks for images with the same surname as the author, ex: “Hoyt.jpg”. The code looks like this:
    <img src="/images/<?php the_author_lastname(); ?>.jpg" alt="" />

Apologia

This is my first Wordpress theme so there are bound to be issues I haven’t considered. Feel free to offer constructive feedback and I’ll factor it all in for the next release.

    Darren,
    Thanks for your generous effort with this. I’ve been playing around with the WP tags since your previous article in this series, and having a reference example like this theme is a great help.
    Keep up the good work.
    Cheers - GD

    Thanks for the feedback, guys. If you choose to use the theme for an online magazine you’re launching, send me the link and I’ll include it in a roundup of Mimbo-enabled sites sometime soon (I’m already seeing a few popping up in the referrers).

    I’m using this theme for my upcoming magazine. Check the link out. I promise I’m actually going to do some customization of the theme soon, I’ve just been busy. What is the license on Mimbo by the way?

    Mimbo is under the GNU/GPL license, for what that’s worth. I urge people to do whatever they want with the theme — leaving the credit link in the footer or in the CSS is always appreciated.

    A few people have asked about the “Read More” function inside the Lead Story. Please see item #8 in the Release Notes for further explanation.

    I still don’t know how to make the features images to show up. I’ve uploaded them into the main article but didn’t worked. How do I do this?

    Bruno, check out #8 in the original article. The images should be referenced in the_excerpt (make sure to use an absolute path), or you can always create a custom field for them instead.
