Brian Whitman is a teacher with the Music, Mind and Machine group at the MIT Media Lab -- A group of people that teach computers how to hear music.
As a project this year, they let their system listen to as much Christmas music as it could handle.
When done it synthesized the data into sixteen new timeless classics.

Making scones is easy, here's how you can prepare some in under 20 mins:
Enjoy while hot -- with tea if possible, but coffee works too.
Wikalong is a FirefoxExtension that embeds a wiki in the SideBar of your browser, indexed off the url of your current page. It is probably most simply described as a wiki-margin for the internet.
It's a simple and very useful approach to web annotation, based on an extended version of the kwiki wiki clone.
Install the extension, and enjoy being able to add comments (in wiki markup) ''attached'' to any web page. Annotations are stored globally as wiki pages, on the Wikalong website, for everyone to share.
Future versions will include the kwiki extension, so you can run your own private wikalong server.

Getting Things Done -- GTD for short -- seems to be the productivity program taking over the world right now.
Like many others, I too have been reading the book lately, and found it very inspiring.
Merlin Mann wrote about his setup, and how he organized his set of lists -- nerd style. His [43 Folders][] blog is dedicated all things related to GTD, from a personal perspective.
A really great source of inspiring ideas for anyone interested in getting organized.

Mentionable Python discovery of the day:
DOMForm is a Python module for web scraping and web testing. It knows how to evaluate embedded JavaScript code in response to appropriate events.
Basically it's a python DOM implementation with JavaScript support (using the Mozilla Spidermonkey JavaScript-C engine).
It's great for screen scraping and, apparently planned for inclusion in in Mechanize.
Worthy of notice is Mechanize, a stateful programmatic web browsing module. It's very useful for web unit testing.

At Edgewall, we use sjphone as our voip softphone of choice, and it works quite well. It does, however, lack a decent ringer and call notification to alert you of an incoming phone call.
sjphone-ringer is a simple awk hack for sj phone, a wrapper that allows for notification upon incoming calls. By default it uses KDE's knotify mechanism for visual display and aplay to play a ringer sound, but can easily be adapted to your liking.
Of possible interest and value to UNIX neophytes - it uses the script utility to unbuffer the stdout output from sjphone, quite a useful trick.

This week is the 30th anniversary of the surrender of the last fighting soldier in the second world war.
On March 10th, 1974, 2d Lt. Hiroo Onoda surrenders to Philippine authorities. He believed World War II was still underway and continued a 30 year guerrila battle with other islanders. His final capitulation came first when his senior officer, Major Taniguchi, was flown to the island and ordered his surrender.
When Onoda landed in Japan, his older brother was waiting to greet him. ''I don't know whether to shout ''Well done,'' he declared, or ''You damn fool!''''

He later wrote a book about the life in the jungle, struggles, duty and futility.
No Surrender: My Thirty-Year War -- By Hiroo Onoda
A truly remarkable story that never ceases to remind me of the importance of putting things into perspective.
Mike Mason has written an excellent article where he tries to explain why CVS users should be interested in Subversion.
Chia-liang Kao has written a nifty program, svk, to make Subversion work in a distributed fashion. This is one of the great features of arch to the envy of some subversion users.
It's good to see the subversion design is proving itself hack-friendly.
There's a recent article on oreillynet on svk:

The svk program and project itself is at http://svk.elixus.org/

Wondering how to make a really good cup of coffee?
Look no further:

After years of development, the Subversion revision control system has been reached the the near-magic 1.0 version.
This shows that our timing with Trac has been pretty good, especially since we're planning a first release real-soon-now.
We've completed a new set of templates, giving Trac (IMHO) a better appearance It should also be alot better in terms of usability now.
Check it out at http://projects.edgewall.com/trac/trac/
I hope you like it.
So, we finally have a project website and all for the Trac project. It's still rough around the edges, although it already works really well.
We've just started revising templates and appearance and it'll should get more polished as we go along.
Edgewall is proud to announce the immediate availability of our flexible software project management tool currently under development.
Trac is a minimalistic but highly useful software project environment based
around wiki concepts. It extends wiki functionality to allow easy linking
between project documentation, bug reports and source code in a revision
control system.

Trac is now finally released as an open source project. It'll be fun to get feedback from more people.
The current plan is now to cleanup the code somewhat and polish the visual appearance and then start adding more exiting features again.
We have published a weblog at for continuous company- and project news, software development and progress updates.
The web log aims to provide customers, open source contributors and other
interested parties insight into the workshop of Edgewall, development efforts
and news events.
