Main Observations
  • The current bluetongue serotype 8 epidemic is now into its 13th week, with the case total having risen to 1756 herds, compared to 1593 herds last week. It should be noted that the reporting of new cases from a particular week may be updated the following week(s) as a consequence of reprting delays.
  • The vast majority of cases in this outbreak has been reported from Belgium, Germany, and the Netherlands. The latest data suggest that the pattern of slow geographical spread around the three main foci is continuing even though the number of new cases is stabilizing. The exception this week was the northwestern part of Belgium, which reported the largest number of new cases.
  • Also, the majority of the newly reported cases in Belgium concerned small ruminants. It needs to be emphasized that this observation has to be interpreted cautiously as this observed clustering may be the result of spatial variation of the population at risk.
Number of cases reported by country and by animal species affected.
