Joint event EFSA-AESAN "Science supporting Risk Surveillance of Imports"

Seville , 10 février 2010

European consumers expect a high level of food safety across all products available on the European market independent of their origin.

To sustain this high level of protection, the way import risks are assessed needs to be regularly reviewed, particularly in a context of increasing world trade. These assessment methods require information from exporting countries, European border controls and surveys on the results of consumer protection. Methodological problems encountered are often similar for plant, animal or human health.

A first discussion of the above issues took place at the joint French Food Safety Agency (Afssa)/EFSA symposium on “Health risk assessment in the context of food, animal and plant imports in the European Union” , on October 3rd 2008. EFSA’s Advisory Forum supported further consideration of these issues.

This workshop organised jointly by the Spanish Food Safety Agency (AESAN) and EFSA, aims to highlight best practices currently in place and the latest methodological developments and research to support decision-making. Hosted by AESAN, it will be held in Seville on 10 February 2010 in conjunction with the 35th meeting of the Advisory Forum.

The morning session will address the state of play and current systems used for identification of risks related to imports while the afternoon session will focus both on methods currently applied for import risk assessment and new developments in this field.
