GM Food - Introduction

Genetically Modified Organisms (GMOs) and Genetically Modified Micro-organisms (GMMs) can be defined as organisms (and micro-organisms) in which the genetic material (DNA) has been altered in a way that does not occur naturally by mating or natural recombination.

On 28th January 2004 the Commission held an orientation debate on a Communication taking stock of all the EU policy and legislative initiatives relating to GMOs.

In its White Paper on Food Safety the Directorate-General Health and Consumer Protection announced various measures to tighten and streamline the Community rules governing novel foods and foods containing or derived from genetically modified organisms.
