In general nutrition labelling is governed by Council Directive 90/496/EC, as amended by Commission Directive 2003/120/EC.

In January 2003, the Commission launched a consultation among Member States and stakeholders in view of preparing a proposal amending Council Directive N° 90/496/EEC on nutrition labelling. Please note that this is a consultation document only and does not necessarily reflect future policy orientations of the European Commission. The overall objective for this revision will be to improve the existing nutrition labelling rules in order to facilitate consumer understanding and informed choice.

Comments from more than 50 interested parties were received. Following review of these comments, the Commission services intend to prepare a legislative proposal by December 2003.
