Foot-and-Mouth Disease in South Korea signals regional risk

Coordinated, multinational response required

FAO is calling for veterinary and border control authorities in Asia to be on alert for animals showing signs of infection by Foot-and-Mouth Disease (FMD), following an unprecedented outbreak of the livestock-affecting sickness in South Korea. The work of FAO veterinary professionals reaches all corners of the world. At the moment, there are 156 veterinarians working for FAO. Of these, there are 14 in North Africa and the Middle East, 56 in Europe, 9 in Central Asia, 30 in East Asia and the Pacific, 11 in Latin America, and 36 in sub-Saharan Africa. FAO’s Animal Production and Health Division assists ministries of agriculture, animal health agencies and veterinary units of member countries to improve the veterinary services delivered to a wide variety of livestock production systems.
