Biographies
Geoff Battersby
is a retired physician who was the Mayor of Revelstoke for 10
years ending in Nov. 99. He was active in the establishment of the Revelstoke Community
Forest Corporation in 1992 and has been the chairman of the board since its inception. He
was also a founding director of the Columbia Basin trust. He is currently co-ordinating
the Revelstoke Community Forest energy project which will combust wood waste to generate
electricity and heat water for circulation as a heat source to major commercial and
institutional buildings in Revelstoke.

Cameron Beck has
substituted for Laurie Vaughan, president of the Ulkatcho Forest Company and Yun Ka
Whuten Holdings during the committee meetings. Cameron has been staff at the Carrier
Chilcotin tribal council for over eight years. Cameron has played a role in developing the
Ulkatcho community forest initiative and works with many Aboriginal communities in the
Cariboo Chilcotin area.

Dave Haley is a Professor
of Economics and Forest Policy and associate of the Forest Economics and Policy Analysis
Research Unit with the University of British Columbia . His main interests include
institutional and public policy environments in which forestry is practised, with
particular emphasis on property rights and fiscal arrangements. He is also interested in
smaller scale forestry and is an advocate for community forestry in British Columbia.

R.M. (Rick) Jeffery is a Registered
Professional Forester well known in the forest industry and has extensive consulting
experience in the forest sector. Mr. Jeffery has been with the Truck Loggers Association
for 12 years, serving as Vice President of Forestry and Policy for two years, prior to
being appointed President in November 2000. Mr. Jefferys portfolio has afforded him
experience in providing strategic planning, analytical research, government relations and
policy advice to the TLA Board of Directors. He has been a member of the Association of
British Columbia Professional Foresters since 1986.

Ralph Moore is the
vice-president of the Creston branch of the East Kootenay Environmental Society. He is
also Director of the Creston Community Forest License and was a participant in the
Kootenay CORE land use process. He has worked for 20 years in the logging and sawmilling
industry.

Doug Routledge is the
Forestry Manager with the Northern Forest Products Association, a position he has held
since October 1993. During the 12 previous years Doug was the Silviculture Department
Manager with the Prince George consulting firm Industrial Forestry Service Ltd. and
Forestry Supervisor with West Fraser Mills Ltd. at their Quesnel and Williams Lake
operations. Doug was also on Prince Georges Forest for the World Commission and is a
past member of the Prince George and Area Community Forest Steering Committee.

Earl Smith is the president
and C.E.O. of Hectate Logging Ltd. He is also a director of the Forest Alliance of B.C., a
member of the Forest Practices Code Committee and a member of the Land and Resources
Committee of Forest Renewal British Columbia. He was involved in securing the first-ever
provincial timber quota for Ehattesaht First Nations and in initiating and completing a
Sustainable Development Strategy for the Western Strathcona area of Vancouver Island.

Keith
Spencer is currently a co-owner of Vanderhoof Speciality Wood Products and
owner of a forestry consulting business, Black Ink Consulting. He has twenty years
experience operating, and managing primary log breakdown facilities, of which seven of
those were in design and retrofit. He is currently involved with; the Central Interior
Wood Processors Association as their past president for four years, a member of the
Northern Development Fund Advisory Committee, a two year member of the Community Committee
for FRBC, a board of director for South Yukon Forest Corporation, a member of the
Community Forestry Advisory Committee, and a director for Dezti Wood Ltd. Keith is also a
recipient of the Fraser River Basin Award and the Forests Excellence Award in the
community category.

Chris
Tollefson is a professor of law at the University of Victoria. He has worked
with a variety of environmental organizations, First Nations and local communities on
forest issues. He is the past Chair of the Sierra Legal Defence Fund, and a founder and
executive director of the UVic Environmental Law Centre, Canada's only clinical program in
environmental law. He has written on a variety of forest-related topics, and is presently
working on an interdisciplinary research project that considers the implications of
eco-certification for B.C. forestry.
