North Columbia Zone
The Southeast Fire Centre, headquartered in Castlegar, covers the entire southeast portion of British Columbia. The North Columbia Zone lies in its northern portion; the area of the Columbia River known as the "Big Bend". Revelstoke in the west and Golden in the east serve as the area's two main resource centres.
Surrounded by the Columbia and Rocky Mountains, those who live, work and play here appreciate the "vertically" challenging ground, its rugged beauty and the difficulty of access to all the recreational and industrial opportunities in the area.
These same factors present a challenge to our firefighters. Steep slopes can determine fire behaviour and limit fire action, and our inability to quickly access the fire may increase its size and damage. Contrary to Provincial averages, most of the forest fires in this area are lightning caused. However, considerable costs and damages are incurred every year due to careless use of fire. Please help us by being careful with your industrial and recreational fires, and report any fire that appears to be unattended.
