FSF seeks a Program Assistant

This is a full-time position in Boston, MA working for the Free Software Foundation.

Job Description

The Program Assistant handles initial communications for the Foundation through its first-contact email address and general correspondence, escalating within the organization as necessary. The Assistant supports the President and Executive Director, including maintaining and arranging travel schedules and details of speaking engagements. The Program Assistant maintains and processes data for the Foundation's Associate Member, Corporate Patron, and General Donation programs, and assists in the organization of seminars and events. She or he also provides related administrative support to other staff as assigned. This position reports directly to the Executive Director.


This is an opportunity to work for the organization that started the GNU project, authored the GPL, and launched the Free Software Movement. Working in support of FSF President, Richard Stallman, you will gain a rounded knowledge of the work of the Foundation.


  • Experience of working with GNU Emacs, and able to compose HTML and have knowledge of LaTeX.
  • Excellent written communication skills, and able to demonstrate that they can work in a precise way whilst handling multiple tasks. Experience of organizing events and dealing with complex travel schedules.
  • Candidates must support the principles of Software Freedom and demonstrate their knowledge of the work of the Foundation.

Other details

The job must be worked on-site at FSF's downtown Boston offices. An on-site interview will be required with both the Executive Director and FSF President.

This job is a union position. The salary is fixed at $35,648/year and is non-negotiable. Other benefits include the following:
