Order of Merit of the Police Forces

Order of Merit of the Police Forces

Canadian Police Forces have a long history of service to the people of Canada. Protecting people at risk is often a dangerous and at times a lonely mission. Officers and employees of the police forces have distinguished themselves in a myriad of ways across the country.

Many have demonstrated dedication and devotion beyond the call of duty, and the Order of Merit of the Police Forces recognizes their commitment to this country. It was established in October 2000 to honour a career of exceptional service or distinctive merit displayed by the men and women of Canadian Police Forces.

The three levels of membership -- Commander, Officer and Member -- reflect long-term, outstanding service with varying degrees of responsibility.

The Queen of Canada is the Sovereign of the Order, and the Governor General is the Chancellor and a Commander of the Order. The Commissioner of the Royal Canadian Mounted Police is the Principal Commander of the Order.
