Caring Canadian Award : Name and Symbol

Between November 1995 and January 1996, Canadians were invited to take part in a national contest to name and design a new award to honour "Unsung Heroes". The name, "the Governor General's Caring Canadian Award", was chosen and the award symbol was selected from among almost 1,000 submissions to represent Canadians who selflessly give their time and energy to others.

The maple leaf, which is supported by a helping hand and heart, symbolizes the people of Canada and the spirit of its people. The heart depicts the open-heartedness of volunteers and caregivers. The hand is outstretched to represent boundless generosity.
