If other sites copy my original copyrighted content, will that hurt my site's rankings? Report abuse

I would really like to hear from a Google Employee please.

All the content in my web site is written by me, all original, and all copyrighted through the U.S. Copyright Office.  Throughout the years, I have successfully submitted many DMCA takedown notices (too many to keep count).  Recently, I just found 20+ more web pages using my word for word copyrighted content (which I just finished submitting notices again) and those infringing pages are all searchable in Google.  My site's content seems to get copied often, many times, faster than I can hunt them down.  The content comes from my handmade jewelry web store, so it's mostly my marketing tag lines, descriptions, and useful informational content, etc..  The infringers are using my content to sell, describe, and market their products that are similar to mine.  I have placed bright copyright warnings on each of my pages and even added a right click pop up warning about copyrights.  It doesn't stop them.  Anyway, does this hurt my rankings, having word for word content on so many different sites?  Is there a way for Google to know where original content came from?  I'm scared that Google will view my web pages as mirrored pages, since some infringers copy entire paragraphs and entire pages!  Thanks in advance!

I know you're filing lots of DMCA notices already, but at least this way you're going to cut off the offenders' primary source of traffic.

You might also want to look into www.plagiarismtoday.com for other ideas on prevention and things like that (not my site, but the guy helped me out a couple of times with eBay-related thieves).

Thanks adams416, appreciate the link.  I'll check it out.  There are just so many of them.  I keep taking them down and more will show up.  I worry that Google will not think my site is the one with the original content, even though I have the copyright registration.  I also do not want the infringing sites ranking higher than mine, using my content.

When I search for my copyrighted sentence in quotes, infringers' sites show up before my site.  Example:  "jewelry should be the last thing you put on when you're getting dressed"...  http://www.etsy.com/shop/nellienaza/policy comes up before my copyrighted page (http://www.artedesigns.com/how_to_care_for_your_jewelry.htm).  Or "feather earrings are just what you need to get in touch with nature"... several pages from http://shannonsaintclair.com/products/feathers/geode-stone-feather-earrings/ and http://www.cheapfeatherhairextension.com/feather-earrings-c-3.html (this one stole an entire paragraph!) show up before my copyrighted page (http://www.artedesigns.com/feather_earrings.htm).  I know that there will always be sites out there who will copy content and it's my job to file DMCA notices, but why are they ranked higher than my site using my original content?

I've been trying to submit DMCA notices today and have been encountering errors.  Can someone PLEASE look at this?  I get an error saying "No new URLs were found in your submission. There are no URLs remaining after duplicate URLs were removed. Duplicate URLs may have been in this request or previous requests."  but I have NOT yet submitted the urls in question?  The message itself is not clear!

By the way, the duplicate problem is still ALIVE AND WELL and has not yet been addressed for a lot of people.  A lot of legitimate webmasters continue to hurt over this.  Supposedly, Panda 2.2 was going to address the issue but it has barely made a dent in this problem.  I sure hope Google employees are aware of this and will actually do something, rather than claim they have fixed the duplication issue.

The fact is, THEY HAVE NOT.  I continue to file DMCA requests daily, and it seems that this situation is oft repeated everywhere.

pandahatesme, I submitted 21 DMCA notices online today.  I've already taken down over 60 pages in the past (stop counting after that).  I'll have to continue doing so whenever I find time.  I just don't understand why infringing sites are ranking higher than mine, with MY word for word copyrighted content.  Makes me think that my pages are being penalized for duplicate content, even though I'm the legal copyright holder.

According to Google:

"If you find that another site is duplicating your content by scraping (misappropriating and republishing) it, it's UNLIKELY that this will negatively impact your site's ranking in Google search results pages."

http://www.google.com/support/webmasters/bin/answer.py?answer=66359

But, who knows. The Google algorithm is just a program. It is not perfect. It just was developed by regular human beings. Not gods.

Yes KimLO it will affect your rankings,

There's lots of people on here that know how you feel KimLO, and I'm one of them. In fact I'm just beginning to see new pageviews/comments for pages that I've wrestled back from thieves.

for you though and any others I would advise the following.

1) If you see some of your content on a high ranking site then get it removed ASAP, web hosts can be slow in responding to or actioning DMCA so get the DMCA filed asap.

2) Use some code/javascript like the following to prevent people copying (it can be bypassed but it's a pain to the novice)

<div id="mydivid"></div>               -------- put your copyright text in the div

#mydivid{-moz-user-select:none;-webkit-user-select:none;-khtml-user-select:none;-o-user-select:none}                      ------ add this to your css

<script type="text/javascript">(function ($) {$.fn.disableSelection = function () {return this.each(function () {if (typeof this.onselectstart != 'undefined') {this.onselectstart = function() {return false;};}else if (typeof this.style.MozUserSelect != 'undefined') {this.style.MozUserSelect = 'none';} else {this.onmousedown = function() {return false;};}});};})(jQuery);</script><script type="text/javascript">$(document).ready(function() {$('#mydivid').disableSelection();});</script>      --- add the javascript at the end of the page

3) Choose something other than snippets of texts from your main pages as googles search results often gets scrapped.

4) Look at your awstats and block unknown scrapers accordingly with something like (snippet of my htaccess)

RewriteCond %{HTTP_USER_AGENT} Bloglines|Baiduspider|Sogou|Spinn3r|Gnash|RiverglassScanner|FeedBurner|ichiro|ClickSense|BPImageWalker|BDFetch|Nutch|discobot|FDM|WordPress|InAGist|DailyPerfect|TraceLink|TalkTalk|Extractor|flashlite|GoScraper|TwengaBot|Nozilla|Ruby|Axel|Teqpad|Midori|ESigil|Screen|SPICE|Drupal|Unicorn|RockMelt|cmsworldmap|WikioLabsBot|NaviPress|Ezooms|Openstat|Novarra|Agent|VB\ Project|Tcl\ http\ client\ package|ICS|Wing|pflab|HttpGetFile|CheckFormat|Susie|unknown|kame|Moki|Primeport|Bison|hotpage|PostRank|Cuam|MovableType|JoBo|Dragonfly|WinHTTP|Railo|swish|JS-Kit\ URL\ Resolver|twigg|MSIE\ 999|InetURL|PagePeeker|HTTP_Request|WebCorp|Microsoft\ Windows\ Network\ Diagnostics|CakePHP|blah|Hanzo|Zend|Extreme|Nuance|gvfs|AppEngine [OR]
RewriteCond %{HTTP_REFERER} ^XXX
RewriteRule ^.* - [F,L]

google won't respond to individual cases as they have no way of knowing (or proving) if you are friend or foe (i.e. are you a spammer trying to wrestle content from the original author).

I found a strange page that I guess is what scraping is.  (?)  It had a bunch of my text mixed in with random words they added here and there.  http://www.add-a-pearlsale.info/uncategorized/feather-earrings-peaerect-featchastening-long-fe-peacock-earr.html  This was only one site though.  Why do they do that?  All the others are copying word for word entire paragraphs and some entire informational pages from my site.

Thanks, chipfat for the codes.  I'll have to see if my husband can help with that.  I know some HTML, but not familiar with the rest.

Sad that Google will not respond.  I'll be happy to give them my copyright registration/number, date, and title.  The record can be confirmed at copyright.gov.

addendum KimLO

be careful when submitting dmca's to Digg, that is if you find your content pasted on their pages , the morons there have a nasty habit of sending your dmca including your personal identification to a website called chilling effects. I just found out after my web host informed me that someone was trying to wrangle my domain.

It does no good to send an email to to get your name removed as per their privacy page, as they ignore it.

"If you want to get information about you that may be in our records, or if you want us to correct or remove such information:"

Contact the site's privacy administrator at privacy@chillingeffects.org.

Thanks for the info, chipfat.  I'm not familiar with Digg, I have only submitted DMCA's to mostly Google, Etsy, various web hosts/blogs, and most recently Facebook.  Can't believe someone was trying to wrangle your domain!  Anyway, I checked on chillingeffects.org and saw 3 of my C&D notices listed and all 3 showed my full name and URL.  I just emailed the address you gave me.  Thanks again!

"I just emailed the address you gave me."

They'll ignore it like they ignored mine.

I believe google also submits data to chillingeffects because they want the web to be unfettered yet they don't like duplicate content in their index, strange indeed.

Thanks, chipfat.  My husband is looking into all the code you gave me.  I thought he posted to this, but I don't see it.  I use Google Analytics, but awstats is new to me.  You're right about Google submitting those to chillingeffects.  I'll be prepared to get ignored.
