Pourtant saint Grégoire le dit clairement : il suit une ligne directrice, « ordo redactionis ». Alors le lecteur s’interroge : quel est cet ordo redactionis ? Où le trouver ? Comment le suivre ?Cet ordre est en réalité celui d’un commentaire centré sur Job, l’athlète de Dieu et en procès contre Dieu, type du Christ à venir. Or si ce fil directeur est la trame des Moralia et apparaît explicitement dans les préfaces des six volumes et les sentences qui les parsèment, il est cependant constamment interrompu par des notices explicatives, des digressions, des excursus. Ainsi se structurent les trente cinq livres des Moralia.  The Ordo Exposositionis in Saint Gregory the Great's MoraliaGregory the Great's Moralia are at first sight not only long but devoid of an ever-obvious order. Saint Gregory however clearly asserts that he follows a guideline, ''ordo expositionis''. Therefore the reader wonders : what is that ordo expositionis ? Where is it to be found ? How are we to follow it ? That order as a matter-of-fact is a commentary centered on Job, God's athlete and at law with God, a type of the Christ to come. Now if that guideline is the web of the Moralia and explicitely appears in the prefaces of the six volumes, and the maxims they are dotted with, it is however constantly broken by leaf-lets, digressions, excursuses.
