Summary Statistics for Globally Threatened Species

Tables of summary statistics generated from the threatened species database are made available here:

Tables 1 and 2 are organized by taxonomic group and show numbers of threatened species in all IUCN Red Lists from 1996 to the current Red List; these should be consulted to see a summary of overall changes in numbers of threatened species over recent years.

Tables 3 and 4 are organized primarily by taxonomic group; these should be consulted for example, to see a summary of the number of mammals assessed as threatened (the second table is an expanded version of the first).

Tables 5 and 6 are organized primarily by country; these should be consulted for example, to obtain a summary of the number of threatened mammals in any particular country.

The tables include information on full species ONLY (i.e. not subspecies, varieties or geographically isolated subpopulations or stocks). Previous country tables omitted certain wide-ranging marine species because they did not have country records in the database at the time. Since the release of the 2003 Red List, country records have been provided for marine species, where data are available, therefore, these also appear in the country tables (tables 5 and 6).

Prior to the 2006 Red List, the country tables displayed figures for only species with confirmed distributions within a country (i.e., species with an unconfirmed occurrence were not included in that country's statistics). Similarly, in table 6, the country figures for all categories (except EX and EW), did not include species that were regionally extinct (RE) within that country. However, this sometimes resulted in differences between the figures displayed in the country tables and figures obtained through a search of the web site. Therefore the country tables now INCLUDE unconfirmed occurrences and regionally extinct species; the only exclusions in the tables are species that are introduced to a country (i.e., are not native to that country), which are also automatically excluded when searching the web site.
