New to RSS? Then, read on ...

RSS stands for Really Simple Syndication, an XML-based format for content distribution. RSS is an efficient way to browse the news and blog entries. RSS feeds (also called Web feeds or channels) usually offer headline and summaries; if you want to read more of the story, a link directs you to the news site or blog.

For a detailed description of how RSS works, see Wikipedia's entry on RSS.

Here, RSS allows you a quick and timely glimpse of the latest news and features being uploaded to The Japan Times Online. Whenever fresh content is uploaded to our site, it will appear in the corresponding feed.

NEWS READERS

There are many way to receive RSS news feeds. This is just an brief overview of what's available.

Applications

One way to receive feeds is a dedicated news-reader software application, which you must install and set-up on your computer.

For Windows users, recommended readers include FeedDemon, Awasu, and NewzCrawler).

For Mac users, options include NetNewsWire, Endo and NewsFire.

Mozilla's e-mail application, for Windows and Macintosh, can also handle RSS feeds. The Safari browser for Macs can also read feeds.

Online readers/aggregators

Another option is an online news reader, which allows you to access your feeds remotely from any computer.

Major sites include Google Reader, Bloglines (available in Japanese), Rojo and FeedLounge.

For Japan-based online readers, options include Red Cruise, Goo's RSS reader and Headline-Deskbar.

A full list of Japanese RSS readers can be found at RSS Navi.
