Prime Minister Junichiro Koizumi reshuffled his Cabinet Oct. 31, 2005 and gave key posts to three possible contenders to succeed him in the country's top job next year.

Shinzo Abe, former deputy secretary general of the Liberal Democratic Party, was appointed chief Cabinet secretary; former Internal Affairs and Communications Minister Taro Aso received the foreign minister's portfolio; and Finance Minister Sadakazu Tanigaki was reappointed.

Koizumi's choices raise the curtain on the race of prime ministerial hopefuls that is expected to culminate next September when his term as LDP president expires.
