Workshops and Masterclasses
with Peter Knight
The Musicians amongst you may be interested in an event that I am hosting during September.
Following a very successful and inspirational Masterclass at the Scottish Academy of Music and Arts, I have been
invited to do something similar this side of the border.
It will be a two day Masterclass held over the Weekend of the 13th and 14th of September 2008 at the Village Hall,
Lower Oddington, Stow-on-the Wold, Gloucestershire.
It will be interspersed on the Saturday evening with a public concert by my trio 'Gigspanner', and Musicians taking
part in the Masterclass can join us on stage if they wish to at a designated point in the proceedings.
This event will be very beneficial to Fiddle players obviously, but is in no way restricted to them. However, it
is unlikely to be suitable for absolute beginners as the emphasis will be less on technique and more about discovering
your own individual and unique musical identity. My focus will be on enabling participants to move on from playing
in a way that is influenced by others to being able to access a place whereby they know they are playing in a way
that reflects their own emotions and inner feelings in all their diversity.
The course fee of £225 will include tuition from myself and support from guitarist Roger Flack, fabulous
organic home cooked lunches and refreshments prepared by the redoubtable and multi-talented Mo Griffiths, and admission
to the Gigspanner concert on the Saturday evening.
There will be a meet up at the Fox in Lower Oddington on the Friday evening to enable us to get to know each other
and ease ourselves into the Weekend.
To give you some idea of what you can expect to gain from this experience, here is what renowned Fiddle player
Brian McNeill had to say following the Workshop he invited me to facilitate at the Scottish Academy:
"Peter Knight is primarily known as the fiddler in Steeleye Span,
the pioneering folk-rock group which has done so much over the years to revitalise British traditional music. We
here at the Royal Scottish Academy of Music and Drama have recently, however, been treated to a different side
of Peter's talents -as teacher and workshop leader.
I have to say that the recent workshop he gave us on aspects of improvisation within traditional music is quite
simply the best I have ever experienced within our genre. It left our student body -excellent players themselves,
and hard to impress- both amazed and excited, and has already resulted in several serious new directions of study,
particularly for our fiddle players.
As a result, he now has a standing invitation to come and deliver workshops for us here at the Academy. I urge
you, if you have the opportunity, to do the same; it isn't often that we see the gift of music so well married
with the gift of education. The results as far as students are concerned will be deep, energising and long lasting".
