IAU Division III consists of six commissions of the IAU plus two divisional working groups (in addition to working groups of the individual commissions). The business of the division is carried out by an executive committee consisting of the the current presidents of all the commissions in the division, the immediate past presidents of those commissions, and the immediate past president of the division itself. The Executive Committee of the division elects the president of the division.

For the 1997-2000 triennium, the president of the division is Michael F. A'Hearn, past president of Commission 15.
