A - DESCRIPTION OF THE ORGANIZATION

Status of Women Canada (SWC) was established by the Government of Canada in 1976 to co-ordinate policies with respect to the status of women and administer related programs.

The mission of the agency is to promote gender equality and the full participation of all women in the economic, social, cultural and political life of the country. The primary responsibilities of the agency are to:



SWC has adopted three departmental priorities, as follows:

Within these priorities, specific strategies over the next three years will focus on five key areas: unpaid work, paid work and employment, social policy reform, systemic violence against women and children, and changing personal relationships.

SWC's priorities provide a broad, longer-term framework for all aspects of the department's work and will continue to guide the substantive work of the department in its three service lines:
