Tourism in British Columbia continues to be one of the most valuable sectors of the provincial economy. Preliminary estimates for 2004 indicate that BC hosted 22.4 million overnight visitors and $9.4 billion in province-wide tourism revenues. Overall visitation to British Columbia is forecasted to increase 2.3% during 2005 to nearly 23 million overnight visitors, generating expenditures of almost $9.9 billion in the province. The government has set a goal of doubling tourism revenues in the Province in the next 10 years.

While British Columbia is already a prominent travel destination, there are significant growth opportunities both from current markets such as Canada, USA, Europe and Asia and from emerging markets including China, India and Mexico. The 2010 Winter and Paralympic Games also provide a unique opportunity for the Province to attract the attention of the world and showcase British Columbia as a premier travel destination.

The Ministry of Tourism, Sport and the Arts is the key driver for expanding the tourism industry through the implementation of the Spirit of 2010 Tourism Strategy   [480 KB] and to enhance and develop all season resorts and resort municipalities. The Strategy provides direction for government's tourism initiatives by facilitating industry development and coordination between various provincial agencies, local government and key industry stakeholders.
